Recently I had to Fdisk my hard drive.

I redownloaded avast for free as i am a home user.

Since running the set up program, I have NEVER had the Avast icon showing in the task area, as it did before i Fdisked my computer.

My Os is windows Xp home with sp2.

Any help would be appreciated.

Can you try to enable the “a” icon in the system tray from the avast! options ( Settings > Appearance>)

If you run C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashdisp.exe will the icon appear?
