Help!!! RPC error

Hi
I had noticed some viruses in my system
So i downloaded Avast4 and ran scan at time of booting
after the system started the START button and all the other buttons at the bottom of the screen were missing and on installing any other software a message comes telling RPC error
I cannot perform ‘Drag’ function
I cannot perform ‘Paste’ function
please help
I am running a Windows XP system

Have (or did) you another AV installed in this system, if so what was it and how did you get rid of it ?

This is a common cause of the RPC error.

If you haven’t already got this software (freeware), download, install, update and run it, preferably in safe mode and report the findings (it should product a log file).

  1. SUPERantispyware On-Demand only in free version.
  2. MalwareBytes Anti-Malware, On-Demand only in free version http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/malwarebytes/mbam-setup.exe, right click on the link and select Save As or Save File (As depending on your browser), save it to a location where you can find it easily later.

i did not have any other system installed
i had an older version of Avast which i uninstalled and installed the newer version of Avast
I have downloaded the softwares you told but am unable to install them becaause of the RPC error

Try a clean reinstall.

Download the latest version of avast http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html and save it to your HDD, somewhere you can find it again. Use that when you reinstall.

Download the avast! Uninstall Utility, find it here and save it to your HDD.

  1. Now uninstall (using add remove programs, if you can’t do that start from the next step), reboot.
  2. run the avast! Uninstall Utility, reboot. If step 1 failed it may be necessary to run this from safe mode, once complete reboot into normal mode.
  3. install the latest version, reboot.

It is possibly that this is a symptom of the infection, if so it is one that I haven’t come across before, if all programs you download

The RPC function is essential to windows and it wouldn’t work without it.

Are you sure that nothing come preinstalled (OEM) with the machine?

Also, are you trying to install avast is the default folder?
