I take it that you are talking about an avast update check ?
If so - Try a repair of avast:
XP - Add Remove programs, select ‘avast! Anti-Virus,’ click the Change/Remove button and select Repair, click next and follow.
Vista, win7 - Control Panel, Programs & Features, uninstall a program, select ‘avast! Anti-Virus,’ click the Uninstall/Change and select Repair, click next and follow.
You may need to reboot after the repair.
If that doesn’t resolve it or you get the same error - avast! Virus Definitions Update - Manual Download VPS Update (virus definitions, vpsupd.exe, approx 83.7 MB). - Save the file to your hard disk, locate where you saved it and double click it and that should carry out the virus definitions update.

I wasn’t suggesting you uninstall but Repair.
If you mean you can’t click the Change/Remove button for avast in the add remove programs, etc. are you getting any errors.
However, you should proceed to the next step anyway, downloading the full virus definitions and install that, as it may resolve the fatal error.
