Help uninstalling Avast SecureLine

Hello,

I have an older MacBook pro and recently updated to BigSur. Since then, I get an icon in the top right taskbar with Avast SecureLine, and I haven’t been able to uninstall it.

I use Avast Security (the free version) and have zero recollection of installing SecureLine, especially since I have my own separate VPN. I have tried installing the free trial of SecureLine and uninstalling it from there: the software is apparently uninstalled, but that icon is still there.

Anyone has any suggestions? My laptop is already a bit old, so I’d rather not have random programmes running in the back that might slow it down. Thanks in advance!

Whilst I don’t use a Mac nor Avast Securline so I asked my friend Google.
how to remove avast secureline vpn from mac

That returned many hits the first one generated by AI and this one from Avast

Ignore the fact this has PC it has an option for Windows - Mac - Android and iPhone/iPad.

Thank you for the quick response! I followed similar steps to uninstall the free trial version; from the icon that’s still left, I don’t get any uninstall option. (and can’t even find any SecureLine programme on my laptop, which confuses me further)

I know there are differences in how stuff is removed from a Mac than from Windows.

However it would appear that your uninstall wasn’t completed successfully, hence the problems. In the Windows version there is an Uninstall Utility which can be run in safe mode to remove such remnants. I don’t know if the same existed for the Avast for Mac installation.

Though there were lots of other hits in that first search link I posted, such as this one, How to Uninstall Avast: Quick Removal and Thorough Cleanup

Which would appear to be closer to the issue you have.

Thank you for the article link! I tried the steps outlined, and deleted 3 leftover SecureLine folders (and various files) in my Library. After a restart the icon was still there, so since I’m also running Avast Security I did a full, clean uninstall of it. I went back to the Library and deleted any Avast files and folders I could find (turns out there’s a lot of stuff still in there, even after a clean uninstall).

I restarted the computer, reinstalled Avast Security, and unfortunately the SecureLine icon is still there. At least it says “Connect Avast SecureLine”, rather than saying it’s already connected.

I’m not sure what else to try at this stage so I might just give up.. (and make sure I don’t install anything Avast-related on future computers to avoid that problem)

Thank you for the help. Even if the article steps didn’t succeed, it was still great housekeeping to go through the Library and delete a lot of stuff. I naively thought that after a clean uninstall, there wouldn’t be so much Avast-related things left on the harddrive!

Sorry it wasn’t a solution to your issue, but not being a a Mac nor Avast Securline user I’m at a loss as to what else to suggest.
