Help! (warning: I have no idea what i'm doing)

I just downloaded avast and my first error was…
You don’t have odbc drivers installed or they are corrupt.
The second error was…
The rpc server is unavailable.
I uninstalled and then redownloaded avast 4 home. Ive never seen the first error message again but my new error message occured in Simple User Interface, under initialization of chest files. It reads…
Action was completed with errors. Program cannot use chest client: (null). The rpc server is unavaiilable. Tried typical solution for rpc errors and that didn’t work, and besides, I don’t even know if I’m looking for help in the right place. I hate to make even the most tentative changes because I’m afraid I’m going to screw something else up. Can anyone help me?

What version of Windows?

If you have Windows 98(se), make sure you have the latest MDAC and Jet drivers installed.

I have windows 98 (not second edition)

Well do you have the latest MDAC and Jet drivers installed?
(Click on INFO in my previous post)

Do you have any other antivirus installed in your computer?
Did you have in the past? Which one?
RPC error is generally related to other antivirus present or, at least, firewall blocking. Do you use a firewall? Which one?

Anyway, RPC error is most likely correct by this procedure:
Go to Control Panel > Add/Remove programs > avast! antivirus > Remove
Then choose Repair function in the pop up window (Repair).

If this does not help, can you uninstall / boot / install / boot again?

At last, about MDAC and ODBC drivers, you may try to open the \data\avast4.ini file and in the [Common] section, change the item Database=ODBC to Database=XML. This could prevent the Microsoft Jet drivers from accessing the database… does it have any (positive) effect?

Had the same problem after installing. Check to make sure the Avast AntiVirus service is running. I had to start mine and after that was able to get the chest to load. Not sure why it didn’t start to begin with seeing as though the service is set to automatic.
