Help with a virus

My son has picked up a virus on his PC which seems to have gotten around avast, spybot , etc. Can’t find its name as it seems not to be on the HD . We have wiped the HC but to no avail. It seems that on boot up it affects the PC screen and generates a whole load of ascii characters. Only way around this seems to be to disconnect the screen , wait for the PC to start and then re connect the screen. We have , formatted the C drive, re installled windows XP, ran avast , including the registry scan , Re - installed the BIOS, :'(and it still does the same thing. If you leave the screen plugged in then occaisionally the screen will produce a fashing cursor , upper left , then turn of , turn on and just repeat this until you turn the PC off and disconnect the screen . When you get the PC running by the screen disconnection method the PC runs fine until next time you turn it off
Any help / advice would be greatlly appreciated \Thanks

This is a hardware error, it has nothing to do with software. Very likely it is a broken video card or monitor. Try another video card to see if it solves the problem. If you have onboard video, you likely must disable that in the bios and set pci or agp as primary video device.

There is no malware that cares if you (dis)connect the monitor or not.

Thanks for that , I will try the video card, I had checked to make sure this was firmly connected , but I will try and alternative card. The reason why we suspected a virus was that my son was loading s Yujio game at the time this happened.A small prgram notice appeared on his screen and disappeared immediately . Then his screen bombed . He since checked the CD and found it had a virus on it. That’s why we were follwoing this track. I 'll let you know how I get on

Matrix moment
