I was using avast! home edition and decided to d/l the professional version.
I can’t seem to get my avast! professional version to play “virus database updated;” when it updates itself.
Also, the little blue screen that use to scroll up from the lower-right corner of my tool bar in Windows XP never scrolls up or appears anymore reading; “virus database updated, etc.”
Does anyone know where I can go to make it do both again?
What are your Program Settings, Update (Basic), Details, see image ?
Mine may differ as I’m on dial-up and wish to control my updates ‘ask,’ because of this I don’t get any notification audible or visual.
Are the avast sounds enabled, in Program Settings, Sounds, e.g. not disabled ?
It’s fixed. I just performed unstall/reinstall and it is working fine. I also uninstalled Outpost Firewall which has a spy ware program with it. Might have been causing it never know. Either way, doing the reinstall fixed it.
I too use Outpost Pro and I have every plug-in disabled except Attack Detection. The anti-spyware is particularly chatty checking lots of files on boot slowing boot due to duplicate scanning (avast will scan files that it wants to open to scan). It is also based on the AdAware anti-spyware so if you have other anti-spyware solutions it is redundant. The same is true of many of the other plug-ins, Active Content, Ads, Attachment Quarantine, etc. Though the DNS cache could be an exception.
You could hope that one of the Alwil team will pick up on this and send you a temp key to cover the full Pro trial period or send an email to support@avast.com explaining the problem, one not of your making, a link to this topic might help.
Thank you again David. You are very helpful as is this forum.
I did just that. Either way, even if I don’t get a temp key I plan to register. I was just hoping for more (trial) time until payday 2 weeks from now.
I received a reply today from tech support regarding my old problem. Just wanted to add it to the thread. We went through this, but it explains it very well. Just thought I’d include it, for more clarity. Won’t hurt.
Good Morning
It sounds like the updates are set to silent mode, to change this, please
try the following:
Right-click the avast! a-ball icon next to the clock
Click Program Settings
Click on Updates (basic)
Click on details
Remove the selection of silent mode
Ensure that ‘display update progress’ is selected
Click OK
Well that is why I posted the settings screenshot which shows my settings with the Running Mode on Normal not ‘silent’ and your image confirmed yours was also set to Normal. So the suggested check although correct (not having seen your settings, details image) wouldn’t have done anything. Did you put a link to this topic in the email ?
My suggestion of contacting support was more to try and get your pro trial key to regain your lost days.
Yes, my apologies for any confusion. I posted my first e-mail from a day or so before I posted my issue to the forum. I just got a reply back today. That was their “official fix.”
I sent a second e-mail regarding your suggestion for a key. No luck on that one. No big deal. I’ll just register it soon. One can always use the free version if one has to in the interum.
