Help with AVAST - Viruses/Worms etc.

G’day everyone ;D,

I hope I am posting on the right Board. Forgive me if I’m not. I’m a newbie.

I have been reading through as many messages as possible regarding my problems (before posting) and just wanted to say what a fantastic bunch of people you are. It’s good to see the responses to people asking for help - the responses are so pleasant and helpful.

Here’s my problem(s):

I have been using AVAST for 2 years and I have no complaints at all about it but I am not computer literate and don’t understand too much about viruses/worms etc.

Last night I tried to get into my Hotmail and I had a message pop up from Avast that I had a virus. I kept trying to “move it to Chest” but another message said “The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process”. (I don’t know what this means : I eventually decided to do a scan and while the scan was running, the Virus alerts kept popping up. I kept clicking “Move to Chest” and after 20 “goes” the scan carried on. It was only when the next Virus alerts popped up that I realised it was not ONE Virus but MANY !!!

When the scan had finished it told me I had 29 Viruses and I checked the Log which showed that a number of the Viruses had successfully been moved to the Chest but a number hadn’t been moved for some reason ::).

I have spent most of the day trying to read the Board to try and fix my problem but I am totally confused as there are so many “answers” and I don’t know what to do first. ???

I am using AVAST 4.7 (Home Edition) VPS Version 000761-0 but I “updated it” and it shows VPS Version 000761-2 .

I have Windows XP.

I don’t know how much information I need to give you but if someone reads this message soon, maybe they can ask me?? Thanks.

I decided to start deleting things I wasn’t using so went to Add/Remove and when I checked Avast Antivirus - it said " Last used on 8/11/2006" - I almost had a fit because this can’t be right??

I just need to know:

Am I supposed to run a scan myself, every day? I assumed that the computer was doing this for me, because every day a blue window tells me “Virus database has been updated”. I’m sorry to sound so naive but that is exactly what I am when it comes to computers.

I am terrified to use my computer in case I spread viruses to anyone. I am hoping that someone can give me some “simple” advice please as I don’t understand the computer language LOL.

I think the virus comes from you hotmail account not from your system. Have you try boot scan your system? The virus database will automatically update, it’s default setting unless you’ve set it to manual. So you don’t need to checked for updates if you not changging this setting.

yeah ,the viruse must come from the hotmail …
just scan the the local computer ,and move the viruse into chest
maybe you can use VRDB to repair your files that attack by the virus.

MeD, I have just read those links you gave me and Yes!, that is the same problem that I had. Malware Name: VBS: Malware [Script] and a couple of File names which I’m sure you don’t want me to list.

Hopefully this problem will be resolved soon then.

I’m still concerned about having 29 Viruses. Is this normal (in one night). I have only ever had 1 Virus Alert in all the time I have been using Avast. I think it’s pretty fantastic.

I am currently also using Spybot S & D (once a week) and Adaware SE Personal (which I run every day). Should I be using any others?

Do I need to use the VRDB now and/or should I use it on a permanent basis. I don’t know what VRDB is so I will go and read up on the message boards for any other tips. If I don’t understand anything, I will ask for help ;D.

Corny, do you have tried boot scan? Tried it 1st to make sure wether your machine has been infected. Disconnect from any networks before you doing this… If you machine really infected id it normal to have up to 29 viruses ( but is not clear wether you’ve got 29 warning msg or 29 different kind of viruses.

The purpuse of boot scan is for checking you entire system wether it’s infected by unwanted program or not in boot menu. Here, how you can set for boot scan…

Disconnect from any networks means you need to unplug your pc from any internet connection or LAN…
