Help with college project

Hi guys!

I am in need of a little bit of assistance. I need to get a list of examples of different types of viruses for a college project. I was hoping it was possible if somebody can send me a list of virus names and their types, such as “Sality” which was a File-Infecting virus. In the past I remember that I was able to access a page on an Anti-Virus website that contained a repository of virus names, the type of viruses they were, and how to prevent getting them, but that’s not possible any longer. Is there anything that somebody can provide for me that is similar to that, or know where I can find something similar?

I doubt that will be possible, whilst viruses are much less seen and most detections nowadays are malware.

Currently in the avast Virus database (another throw back to the days of viruses being the main infection method) there are 6,331,991 signature definitions.

Thanks everybody, specifically Pondus, you’ve been very helpful. Those sites you linked were exactly what I needed.
It’s quite interesting to access these databases and find out how they were taken care of. These exploits can be quite scary.
