Help with ComboFix

My computer is very slow and AVs and Firewalls seem to be getting corrupted (Avast AV, Agnitum Outpost, Malewarebytes). I changed to Microsoft Security Essentials and MS Firewall to see if that solved the problem, but they continue. SEc Essentials will often be disabled when I reboot. The mouse is often useless while the computer seems to be performig some task and grabbing all memory. I had an earlier theread that did not get completed, and I was in the process of trying ComboFix, which I am unhappy to do without help.

OK we will go to combofix, I can see nothing major in the first log so I will look at the drivers

Download and Install Combofix

Download ComboFix from one of the following locations:
Link 1
Link 2

VERY IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • IMPORTANT - Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. If you have difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, refer to this link here

[*]Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
[*]Accept the disclaimer and allow to update if it asks also allow the installation of the recovery console

[*]When finished, it shall produce a log for you.
[*]Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

Notes:

  1. Do not mouse-click Combofix’s window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
  2. Do not “re-run” Combofix. If you have a problem, reply back for further instructions.

Please make sure you include the combo fix log in your next reply as well as describe how your computer is running now

hello Essexboy

Thanks for coming in. I have problems! I thought that I had disbled Security essentials but when Combi started runnning a couple of SE came up and I guess it stopped the Combo from running. Nothing is happening. Just the blue box saying that it mat take 10 mins or more. i am writing from a different machine.

Can I abort Combo? Or maybe go into CTRL/ALT/DEL and stop Sec Essentials?

qim

Yes stop combofix

\Then retry and do not allow SE to stop, quarantine or delete anything… If necessary run from safe mode

I’m stuck

I cannot close ComboFix. I cannot do cntrol/alt/del. In fact, the only way can get out is by cutting off power by pressing theswitch button for about 4 secs.

Should I do that?

qim

Yes shut down the system, but first confirm there is no hard drive activity

Ok. I scanned in Safe Mode and am attaching the log

Thanks for your help

qim

Could you let me know what the current problems are please

Hi Essexboy

As I wrote above, the computer is/was very slow and several security programmes seemed to be compromised by I don’t know what. I am not able to say now if it got any better since the Combo scan.

Was there anything funny in the log that I sent you?

qim

Not really - for the security programmes do the following:

Download a fresh copy to your desktop
Uninstall the failing copy
Reboot
Reinstall the fresh copy

Once done let me know if the problems persist

ok thanks. I will do that

Could I ask you something unrelated? I have a Toshiba laptop that came with XP Home installed. I am trying to get a bootable disk and found a site http://www.ehow.com/how_4797051_burn-windows-xp-recovery-disc.html that tells you what to do. one of the requisits (6) is
the file w2ksect.bin. I have a XP Professional CD. Do you think I could use the file from that disk to boot this XP Home.

Sorry if this is not your department, is there another forum for this type of question?

Thank you very much

qim

Yes that should work
