First if this is too much off topic, please someone remove it.
OK, my daughter has an emachine t2341 with athlonxp 2400+processor,xp home, avast home(of course).
The problem we are having is there is no keyboard function at all.I have tried a new one also.It boots up fine and have mouse function. I have tried system restore and even done a reinstall of the OS
Some things to mention is the num lock, caps lock, scroll lock lights are lighted no matter what. Also the computer power button (on/off) stays lighted up even when shut down.
I hope some of you guys/gals might give an idea what I can try to do.
BTW I have contacted emachine support and they suggested trying to get into the BIOS except I don’t how without the keyboard working.
Thanks for any input or help.tim
Tim, this is not off-topic, you’re asking for help
Did you try another keyboard? Is it a serial (I really doubt…), a PS2 or an USB keyboard?
Could be hardware conflict, but it does not seem so…
Yes Tech ,I tried a new keyboard ps/2. Do you think it may be motherboard problem?
No. I think the problem is the connection between the keyboard cable and the computer or a cable inside of the computer.
If you did not change any BIOS setting, this should be working. PS2 keyboard is one of the most common, stable and easily recognizable hardware…
Do these keyboards work in another computer? I mean, did you test these two in other computer?
Yes I tried the original emachine keyboard on another computer and did not work,so that is when I bought a new one. And no I haven’t been able to get to the BIOS to change anything.Maybe I’ll have a look inside the case for loose wires ,ect, ect.
So… seems the keyboard.
Does this new one work in the old (good) machine?
In fact, the connection could be without wires, just the connector itself… you can call it almost ‘melted’ with the motherboard. But only seeing what is happening… But I’m surprised that you could install Windows without using the keyboard any time… maybe you just ‘overinstall’ (like repairing)… but shouldn’t the windows key be asked for input? :
That’s a good point Tech I suppose I would have had to use key function somewhere ???
Old age I guess.
Tim, I wrote wrong, I did not intend to say F1, F2 the functions keys but inserting the numbers and letters of the Windows CD key (or registration key)… :
Hi Tech, no I did not enter a registration key ,wasn’t the os registered when it new and first started up when we bought it?
Hi Tech, no I did not enter a registration key ,wasn’t the os registered when it new and first started up when we bought it?
Yes, but each reinstall, the program ask for the key…
I even done a reinstall of the OS
But, forget, this is not your problem. Your keyboard is not working and that’s it. Maybe it worked when you’ve reinstalled Windows but not now.
Maybe the better will be calling a technician to see the power connection and the connection of the keyboard.
Maybe the better will be calling a technician to see the power connection and the connection of the keyboardI may do that. This computer is is a basic no-frills model and would hate to spend nearly as much on it to repair as it would to buy a new one on sale.(possibly) I'll have to study on this awhile. Thanks Tech.
Tim, do you have a USB keyboard that you could try? If so, perhaps that would narrow down the problem if a USB keyboard would work.
