Set Outlook Express email accounts to port 110 (default).
Go to each email account, Properties, Advanced tab and set them to 110.
…
DefaultPopServer=your pop server address
DefaultSmtpServer=your smtp server address
SmtpListen=127.0.0.1:25
PopListen=127.0.0.1:110
UseDefaultSmtp=0
AutoSetProtection=1
Trust=127.0.0.1
StartSmtp=1

??? Techie, you recently helped me with this problem, however I have been receiving numerous program crash reports form Avast due to “a program bug or to an invalid data entry” and in an attempt to cure this removed Avast and re-installed twice. This has not worked, also the mail scanner has stopped working. I have configured the ini file according to your settings but to no avail. Also when I ran a virus scan last, the number of days left to register Avast again had reduced from 59 to 6 and stated that I had not previously ran a scan.
So any help you can give with this lot will be gratefully received.
N.B received a program crash message whilst typing this lot.
Cheers
You can use avast! uninstall utility: http://www.avast.com/i_idt_1336.html. If you can’t uninstall avast through Control Panel, you can download the uninstall utility called AvClear or AvClear4 (depending on your avast! version). More information here.
So any help you can give with this lot will be gratefully received.
After booting, maybe you can try a clean avast installation :
Well, the reducing from 59 to 6 days is due to TRIAL version registration key.
To avoid piracy, 2nd installation of the trail version goes from 59 to 6 days of validity.
Are you using the correct Registration key?

:)Thanks for the reply. I have previously uninstalled Avast using the uninstall facility and also the Add/Remove program. I have uninstalled this time with the uninstall program and removed all traces of Avast and am currently reinstalling.
I will see how it goes. 8)
The previous versions were registered except for the last one when the trial period reduced to 6 days remaining.
N.B. it also said I had not run a scan before even though I had run a thorough scan as soon as Avast had been installed. :-\
I will get back to you to let you know how it has gone.
Do you mean at boot time (a blue screen) or a normal scanning?
The boot time scanning is not ‘recorded’ at that point of the skin
Don’t worry, you can run any number of scanning for free ;D

I meant the normal scan.
Have now reinstalled Avast.
I was about to report that having been online for 90 minutes I hadn’t received a bug report. However I have just set the mail scanner in the ini file per your settings and have just received an error message when saving the changes - any suggestions?
What do you mean? Which error message did you receive? Which specific setting are you talking about?
system
54
Sorry, I meant a bug report - “a program bug or an invalid data entry” where it asks you to describe what you were doing so it can be sent off to to the people who build the program. 8)

Further to the above, after reading about another issue, the problem started about the time I upgraged Ad-Aware 6 to Ad-Aware SE.
I can’t imagine the problem is related to there, unless you’re talking about the Pro version and used ad-watch, preventing the installation of some avast startup and registry entries… :

OK thanks.
Now back to the original problem - mail scanning. I have just run the wizard and received another bug report.
This is the relevant section if my ini file
[MailScanner]
DefaultPopServer=pop.ntlworld.com
DefaultSmtpServer=smtp.ntlworld.com#smtp.ntlworld.com
ShowTrayIcon=1
UseDefaultSmtp=0
AutoSetProtection=1
Now I know this is not correct but when I amend it per your settings I get another bug report.
Can you help please?
I do not understand why you should do this…
and not only smtp.ntlworld.com
system

??? This was to show you the content of the mail scanning section of the ini file which is inadequate for avast to run the mail scan.
Yeah it’s inadequate… Why don’t you manually change it?
