I don’t have the rectangle anymore, and am using Chrome as my browser. Comcast contacted me and said it was in fact them, and that their operators should have known and shouldn’t have repeatedly tried to sell me Norton. It took a complaint to the FCC about them to get this information, but it’s fine now. I thought you would appreciate the fact that the person with whom I talked on the phone mentioned that he ran Avast as well.

Now it’s running well, except for many icons on my desktop for the various cleaners who resolved my problem.

Will add/remove programs for all of them be sufficient?

The only one that is mildly annoying is Maleware bytes fairly constant pop up saying it needs updated.
