Help with uninstalling a malicious program.

About a week ago, a Avast pop-up came up saying that a uninstaller for something called “Social Privacy DNS” was malware. I believe this program was installed with a freeware installer, and I did not pay attention when installing the program. I checked the control panel, and it was installed on 4/3/14. But also some Intel drivers were updated on the same day. So its either not a malicious program, and Avast just had a false positive, or it is just a malicious program. But if it is a malicious program, and Avast says the uninstaller is malware, how can I get rid of it? ???

I did already post this in General topics, but someone said it was the wrong place. I do not know how to get rid of the same post at general topics.

we need some logs https://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=53253.0
attach Malwarebytes and Farbar Recovery Scan Tool logs

Used all tools and scanned with them. Malwarebytes found all the things I was talking about. Though, it is still installed. But it just removed all the malicious items. So it wont hurt me. Thanks! Sorry it took me so long to scan with everything.

SocialPrivacy is an advertising supported potentially unwanted program that bills itself as a privacy protector but may also capture user information and interfere with web browsing activities. The software will also display search results in the browser based on your web surfing actions and context. From the EULA: "Social Privacy will also display search results from some of your favorite sites on the web directly in the window you are viewing without detracting from your interaction on sites.

Should I download that tool and try to use it? Or just remove it like I would remove a program the normal way?

Don’t download it.
Wait till a expert comes in to help you.

Ok. Thank you.

Removal team is in bed now, check back tomorrow

Hi there you currently have McAfee running along with Avast. You will need to remove one of them. Let me know which and I will provide the correct tool

CAUTION : This fix is only valid for this specific machine, using it on another may break your computer

Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into it:

ProxyServer: http=127.0.0.1:8118;https=127.0.0.1:8118 SearchScopes: HKLM-x32 - DefaultScope value is missing. Save this as fixlist.txt, in the same location as FRST.exe
Run FRST and press Fix
On completion a log will be generated please post that

THEN

Please download AdwCleaner by Xplode onto your desktop.

[*]Close all open programs and internet browsers.
[*]Double click on AdwCleaner.exe to run the tool.
[*]Click on Scan.
[*]After the scan is complete click on “Clean”
[*]Confirm each time with Ok.
[*]Your computer will be rebooted automatically. A text file will open after the restart.
[*]Please post the content of that logfile with your next answer.
[*]You can find the logfile at C:\AdwCleaner[S1].txt as well.

Just a few questions…

  1. I will take the McAfee uninstaller.

  2. Will I need to remove McAfee before I do this, and when removing it, will I need to be in safe mode?

  3. Are you sure the Notepad thing that I am doing will not damage my computer?

  4. I have already removed some of the Social Privacy DNS malware. When I run the scanner, will it have any problems?

  5. Where is the location for FRST.exe and the place I need to put the text file?

Removing malware is what Essexboy do 24/7 (almost) he is also a teacher, training those who want to become a trained and certified malware remover…
So yes you can trust that he know what he is doing

Ok. I just get very scared when removing malware. I also really do need the location for where I need to put the txt file. I do not know what I am doing there

You should be more scared of getting and keeping it

You save the fix same place you saved FRST tool…
So if FRST tool is saved at your desktop …then you save the fix there

When FRST is run, it will find the fix and execute the comands in it…

One last thing. AdwCleaner found one thing I am not sure about. It is a file and its named C:\WINDOWS\System32\drivers\wStLibG64.sys

Let AdwCleaner remove what it find…

File belongs to a toolbar…

Well, I removed the folders and files for Social Privacy, but it says it is still installed in the control panel. Here are the logs

To remove the control panel entry, try to uninstall it and widows will remove the entry for you

How is the computer behaving now ?

Well, when I uninstalled it, it said it had a error removing it, or something like that, and it said do you want it to be removed anyway? I clicked yes. So I guess its on my system! Thanks so much for all the help guys! ;D

Download the McAfee removal tool to your desktop http://download.mcafee.com/products/licensed/cust_support_patches/MCPR.exe
Uninstall McAfee via control panel
After the reboot run the removal tool

In that case methinks I will send you on your merry way

Subject to no further problems

I will remove my tools now and give some recommendations, but, I would like you to run for 24 hours or so and come back if you have any problems

Now the best part of the day ----- Your log now appears clean

I would recommend that you completely uninstall Java unless you need it to run an important software.
In that instance I would recommend that you disable Java in your browsers until you need it for that software and then enable it. (See How to diasble Java in your web browser and How to unplug Java from the browser)

Now that you are clean, to help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free programmes:
