Helping with my Mom's Computer

I’ve been messing around with my mom’s computer trying to make it run faster. It has a 1.15 Ghz processor which is the most likely reason. I uninstalled some programs but that didn’t help. I also installed Malwarebytes and did a scan. It found an infected registry key identified as “Rogue.AntiSpyware” which I’m not too sure what that’s about. Afterward I did a full scan that did nothing. I did a scan after that with AVG (I haven’t convinced her to let me install Avast!). The scan found two “Adware.RogueSuspect”, which I don’t know what that is either. The most important thing though is when uninstalling programs, I noticed she had two Windows Media 11 players and two Windows Media 11 Runtimes or something. Two had the Windows Media Player icons but two didn’t. The ones that didn’t were 30GB large, which seemed suspicious since the other WMP was only like 9MB. When I went to unistall the extra WMP that was 30GBs, it said uninstalling it could cause many other programs to not work. What do you think about this?

Update avast and download Malwarebytes Antimalware. Schedule an avast boot time scan then reboot.

After the bot time scan. Install Malwarebytes Antimalware, update & run a scan.

Please post an update about the results.

That’s what I would do but I don’t have permission to install avast! instead of AVG.

One thing you could do is to limit the number of programs running when the computer starts.
Lot of installed programs default to “start with windows” when this is usually not necessary. Limiting them to only run when called on to do so will free up a bit of processor and memory.

Did you mean, administrative rights?

No, I mean it’s my mom’s computer so I can’t change programs unless she lets me, but she will probably ask my stepdad if it’s a good idea.

At least see if you can get an scan done with MBAM.
If it’s your Mum’s computer, and you aren’t allowed to install programs etc, there’s probably not much anyone can do to help, unfortunately. It’s hers. What she says, goes.
If she’s happy with the speed, so be it. If, onn the other hand, she actually asks you to try and tweak it a bit, that’s different.

I don’t know why there are two WMP files. Tricky, without physical access to the machine.
You might want to show her these posts, let her have a look at the forum generally, make a judgement call on whether we appear reliable or not.

It appears, there can’t be any better alternative but to disable some useless startup entries. I doubt, you may be able to access msconfig.
