HI,happy to join avast, and trying to save resources..

hi guys just mifrated from another antivirus.
…i was advice to get avast in different forums.
my question is,my machine is old,dell 8200,have only 768rdram.
and already disable some services…runs pretty well.
-i don’t do P2P,instanatnt messaging [windows messenger disable],i don’t do outlook exchange,
can i disable/terminate his options??,should be this ok
i bet i have to leave enable INTERNET MAIL…

thanks in advance.

If you don’t use P2P and IM you can disable that shields. But, really, they don’t take resources.
Which is your email program? Internet Mail is good to keep if you use Thunderbird or Outlook Express or Windows Mail.

i cut the p2p &mail module when it was installed

well i use hotmail …
and so should i killed P2P now,or do i have to reinstalled without P2P
…what about mail…?

Not need to reinstall go to control panel
The click on add/remove programs
Then add/remove avast
After you click on change and choose the components you want to add or remove!
After a reboot the change will take effect ~_^!

shiw lang.
so i can safely uninstall P2P,instant messaging and outlook to save resources right.

and…will i really save resources uninstalling those 3???

I would suggest that you leave the Internet Mail provider running in fact I will go further, set the sensitivity to High.

If you use web mail it will consume little resources, but what it could do for you is alert you to an undetected spambot (with its own very small smtp client) on your system sending out spam. e.g. too many identical emails in a time period.

yes i plan to leave the internet mail, but the other 3…and how to uninstalle them ot just terminate them.
btw…i use privoxy for ad-blocking,but with avast running it controls better ads in a site like yahoo for example.

 Hi :

I do not use Outlook or P2P programs, so I left-clicked on the Avast “a” icon
and went to the “outlook/Exchange” and “P2P” Providers and clicked the
“Terminate” button for both . That way you keep your options open for the
future in case something changes !?

To completely remove them:
From Windows Add Remove programs, select ‘avast! Anti-Virus,’ click the Change/Remove button and scroll down to Change, that will show the various providers of avast, uncheck the 3 you don’t need (exercise care not to uncheck anything else) click next/OK and follow until you are back out…

hi again…i jus decided to “terrminate” the tasks i mentioned…
one more question…when scanning it says “scan archive is not selected”…where do i have to check to make this happen?
thanks

I wouldn’t bother with archives.

Archive (zip, rar, etc.) files are by their nature are inert, you need to extract the files and then you have to run them to be a threat. Long before that happens avast’s Standard Shield should have scanned them and before an executable is run that is scanned.

When you select what it is you want to scan, Local Drives, etc. a slider pops up in which you can set the Sensitivity and also elect to scan Archives, see image.

David,thanks for the class…i didn’t notice it…
thanks again.

You’re welcome.
