Hi Elmo and welcome.
Can you not use the demo key (when you install and first run it asks for reg key but you can also use demo key) which is valid for 60 days. This is for the home free version, I don’t know if this is the same for the Pro version.

Hello Elmo and welcome to forums !!! You just found best forum in the world…
Just listen my friend’s (Technical) advice and everything will be great. You just need to register online (it’s free, no obligations at all) and shortly, you’ll get registry key for your copy of avast! home edition, which is btw, best antivirus ever !!! That registry key is valid for one year, and after that you’ll need to reregister, just like rest of us…
Regarding avast! Pro version… of course if you want Pro version you’ll have to pay for it… that’s the way it should be. We have to reward Alwil guys for making such a great product.
Anyway, welcome again and I’m glad so many Canadians started to use this great antivirus… btw, I’m from Toronto, Ontario. Hope you like all those skins available in avast! skins download section… Link:

Sasha explains how to get, copy & paste the Registration number of the best antivirus around 8)
Elmo is my daughter in law and I did get it reged for her yesterday and I agree this is the best Antivirus and the people on here are the greatest also converted another friend last night to Avast …
The family is growing ;D
;D It sure is … ;D
I’m really confused though, why does Home Edition even need a Reg key? Maybe I’m just stupid but I don’t see why.
I think the main purpose is so the Alwil team can get at least a rough “handle” on how many active users there are.
And of course if you look more closely, the license for the program itself is not only free but permanent, it’s only the right to get updates that you need to renew annually.
