Hidden files not appearing in Windows XP

HI guys the other day i thought my computer was affected by a virus as the hidden folders under
Tools Menu>Folder Options>View Tab>Hidden files and Folders

was not allowing me to open hidden files
that is ,“Show Hidden Files” option was not getting opened up in windows.
I use a shared PC which has certain movies and stuff hidden to keep it away from kids and stuff…so they are hidden and now i am not able to access them let alone find where they are.
I used a virus cleaner from Dr Web Cure It and it detected a virus known as "Win 32:Besso and several trojans from System Restore files which were deleted . Please help me and propose a way out for me without re formatting my system.

Don’t format your hard drive, there are other ways. Ever try system restore if you have XP?

The registry solution you mentioned in your addendum was really helpful but the thing was only temporary and the entry goes away(i think) whenever the hidden option is changed back!
I use windows XP by the way! obvious was’nt it??LOL

Oh BTW another system i have seems to be afflicted by another virus which has forced the entry of the IE homepage to some"sujin.com.np" this is not changing even if i try to change the homepage of IE and i think this is some sort of spyware!
what do you guys think?

I think you have some serious shit going on there! Find out what is changing your setting and eliminate that trojan, spyware, malware-virus before you worry about keeping the hidden files , unhidden.
Try Win Patrol. http://www.winpatrol.com it even now has a key logger checker built in on the free version. any and all tools that can secure your system at this point are pretty critical.

I’d be inclined to download HijackThis, if you don’t already have it, http://www.trendsecure.com/portal/en-US/tools/security_tools/hijackthis, install it as directed, (usually to C:/Program files/hijackthis) and post a scan result here, or at another forum that specializes in these. Castlecops is good, there are several others.
