High CPU right after Fall Creator's Update

Using latest Avast update; 44% CPU; tried repair

If you can provide a screenshot of your Task Mananger CPU Usage while on idle , it would be better to identify which causes the radical change on your CPU usage after the update.

The results of the task manager display (I used a “special” one provided by Microsoft) are saved to a Notepad txt file and are several pages long. Please provide an email address and I’ll send it to you as an attachment.

every time i upgrade to a new windows ver.
I always repair avast after booting up.
The cpu usage is high at first but then goes away afterwards after a couple of minutes.
But my scenario and yours are not the same, there are other factors.
Better send more info here so that others might help you.

My high CPU continued for 2 consecutive days … and I tried a “repair” about 1 day into the process … so even after the repair it ran at a high CPU for another 24 hours. There were several re-boots.

Within the last hour I saved my Avast settings, uninstalled Avast, downloaded and reinstalled, and restored the settings. Everything is now running OK …

So I cannot determine the source of the problem any more.

Hello bobhoward, the broker.exe is associated with only MS apps and checks if they have their full permissions. Some users have said they had high cpu usage caused by broker.exe and an apparent answer is to enter the registry and access the file which is labelled as timer.exe. The next step is to replace the No.3 with a 4 which switches timer.exe to off. Although I did not get a high cpu I tried that tip which resulted in a glitch with one of my programs so I reset it back to 3. What the Fall creator did to my laptop was to indicate that broker.ext had a runtime error with application apps. This has resulted in W10 system settings to fail to open up causing the notification panel to slide out with all the icons on it ghosted and therefore inactive. The panel only works with all icons unghosted in safe mode but that is not the answer due to only a number of components being run. Having tried scannow, packages check and various other action to no avail it appears that a start refresh is the only course open. I updated to the Fall creator on the 19th of last month and was not aware of the 10 day rollback allowance until too late. And of course, all previous restore points were wiped out by the install. As this laptop is not used for all I need to do I did not have a backup. Except for the ability to access W10 functions panel the laptop works normally in all other aspects. Installing Fall Creator on my and my wife’s desktops went smooth.
