High CPU usage since last update

Hello all,

I have never, ever had any problem with Avast! It is just awesome. CPU usage was always around 5%.

But, yesterday I updated Avast, and then I noticed the phone just became slow and irresponsive. I rebooted it, but still the same. So I opened up Android Assistant, checked the CPU usage, and Avast is at the top with arund 25%, sometimes more than 30% CPU usage.

I turned the phone off and on again, and still the same. Disabled virus scanner within Avast, and no change. So I left the phone alone for maybe 20 minutes, just to see if Avast was busy doing something. But Avast is now using 28% CPU.

I never saw Avast use so much CPU. And the battery is going down fast.

The version I have is:

  • App Version: 2.0.4675
  • Virus definition version: 130516-01
  • Number of Definitions: 4551

My device is:

  • Samsung Galaxy Ace GT-S5830B
  • Android 2.3.6
  • Rooted

No new apps or anything installed since Avast started to act strange.

Anyone had the same problem?

Thanks for any help.

[s]OK, CPU usage started to go down veeeeeeeeeeeeeeery slowly. Then two or three reboots, and now it’s normal (< 3%).

Whatever.[/s]

Forget what I said. It’s high again. See next post.

Hi,

if it’s gonna go up again, we’ll take a look at it together

Filip

Well, I was wrong: the CPU usage started increasing again soon after boot. It went up to 30%.

So, I restored version 2.0.3917 from my Titanium Backup, and CPU usage is down to around 3% and stable.

Definitely something going on with the latest version (2.0.4675), at least on my device. :-/

Thanks for the support.

Hello,

Sorry to bother, but there in fact is high CPU usage (25% +) after the latest update. I restored version 3917 from my backups, and that one is normal (~3% CPU usage).

I’m not sure if my message was read, so I decided to post again.

Thanks,

I am also seeing the same high CPU usage problem since the last update. My phone is SE Xperia Arc and avast has been pretty good so far. With the current update, the phone has developed serious lag and Android Assistant shows avast as consistently consuming 30-40% cpu cycles. I have also noticed, but not tracked/recorded that this behavior generally occurs more in the morning hours… I will also probably go back to an older version until this issue is resolved.

Hi to both,

you can “get rid of” the high CPU usage by disabling File Shield in Shield Control, but I have a feeling that this is not really our issue anymore. You both probably have some app(s) that keep writing file(s) to your SD card (for example some cache file being overwritten every few seconds). The job of the File Shield is to scan whatever is read/written there. It’s unfortunate that Android (and mobile devices in general) don’t have any concept of “HDD indicator” as is on computers. I’m pretty sure that you would uninstall an app from your desktop if it would be writing something all the time making your HDD LED shining all the time. Right now there is no way of discovering such apps on Android :frowning: (And be assured that constant writing on SD card might impact your overall device performance, even though the impact is lower than it would be on a desktop).

Filip,

I recall that I did disable the shields (all of them, actually) on the updated version, and that didn’t solve it.

I have the previous version right now, and I can’t find “File Shield”. THere’s App, Web and Message shields.

I’ll update again and see what happens.

Good point about apps writing on the SD card. But I didn’t install any new apps - I just updated Avast! and the problem started. Removed update and the problem ceased.

Thanks,

Hi,

that’s because the shield was added in 2.0.4400 I think, so you don’t see the CPU usage using the old version because it doesn’t have that shield yet. That can mean that you still might have the app(s) that keeps writing to the SD card, you just don’t know now. If you disable all the shields in the current version and the problem persist (even after reboot), we should investigate more cause I can’t think of any other valid reason for the high CPU usage.

Filip

Me too LG Optimus Elite.

I tried to post but if you cant read the capucha right your post gets erased grrrr

FYI, installed version 2.0.4808 today, and all seems good!

And yes, I checked I disabled the file shield.

Thanks for such a great software!
