Highlighted file, but no 'action' to apply

What do you do when it comes up the finished scan, but there is no ‘action’ to ‘apply’?

No viruses found, but password protected files that I would like quarantined. I can highlight the file, but there is no ‘action’ and there is only ‘done’ and ‘?’ (which, tells me nothing about this.)

Why quarantine a file that is not flagged as infected?.....Avast is a antivirus program and will only take action on infected files....

How do I handle files that avast! can’t scan? https://blog.avast.com/2014/02/28/how-do-i-handle-files-that-avast-cant-scan/

Files that can’t be scanned are just that, not an indication they are suspicious/infected, just unable to be scanned.

Many programs (usually security based ones) password protect their files for legitimate reasons, there are others (and avast doesn’t know the password or have any way of using it even if it did know it).

By examining 1) the file name, 2) reason given by avast! for not being able to scan the files, 3) the location of the files, you can get an idea of what program they relate to. You may need to expand the column headings to see all the text.

If you can give some examples of those file names, the locations and reason given why it can’t be scanned might help us further ?

Appreciate the responses, have disabled those files, they were to an old application installation that was uneeded anyway.

I havent had a virus or a worm yet, but it said to click apply and there was no ‘apply’. But the file could be highlighted.

Why list a file if there is no action for it…

Anyway, will post back if it shows a virus or anything and it wont show an ‘apply’, as Ive heard of this issue before but I dont get viruses on mine enuff to deal with it.

Thanks for your responses.

There will be no action available unless it is malware - files that can’t be scanned won’t have any action applied.

Even more so when they are only password protected.

That is why I asked for some examples as we are trying to determine why and if it is reasonable to be password protected:

they are listed as scan error, happens to all AV but all AV does not show this in the result/log .... on some AV you must activate advanced/detailed logging to see it
