Home 4.7.817 won't turn on!

Hi,

I had a problem where Avast continued to ask me to restart my computer, with no effect. So I un installed and then re installed, but now I have the red warning symbol on the little blue ‘a’ icon and I cant turn on my antivirus. It tells me the requested resident task was not found. the operation could not be completed. I activated the anti virus using the code sent when I first started using Avast about 1 month ago.

Please help

Operating system restart needed by avast message could be solved, in some systems, by deleting the file \setup\reboot.txt

You can also check this registry entry (right after computer restart):
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager, if it contains “PendingFileRenameOperations”.
Check its contents and if there’s only “reboot.txt” from avast4\setup folder, delete PendingFileRenameOperations, don’t delete any other key.
Back-up (export) the registry key before you edit/delete, just in case.

About the ‘red cross’ in the ‘a’ blue icon, well, your avast installation is not good.
Which is your Windows? 98, Me, XP?
Do you use any other antivirus in your computer?

Can you try to repair your installation?
Go to Control Panel > Add/Remove programs > avast! antivirus > Remove. Then choose Repair function in the popup window (Repair). You must be connected to the internet while repairing.

If this does not help, can you uninstall / boot / install / boot again?

Thanks for the reply. I tried the first bit, deleting reboot.txt, didn’t make any difference. Your second set of instrutions i will need to ask a mate how to do that.
My operating system is home edition XP. I don’t use ant other anti virus. I tried repair, no joy. I uninstalled, reboot, install, reboot. Still the same problem, it keeps asking me to reboot and won’t let me turn on the anti virus? Over to you ?

  1. Start menu > Run
    Type Regedit and click Enter
  2. Browse to the key (folder) HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager
Click over the folder HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager at left
  3. File > Export (save that key contents, for backup purposes).
  4. Look at the first column in the right panel if it contains a value called “PendingFileRenameOperations”.
  5. If there is a file for rename called “reboot.txt” from avast4\setup folder, delete the value ‘PendingFileRenameOperations’
Don’t delete any other key or value.
  6. Boot

hi,

I don’t have a “PendingFileRenameoperations” or a file “reboot.txt”.

I have in FileRenameOperations, Name; ab (Default). Type REG_SZ. Date (Value not set)???

I highlighted “Session Manager” and exported it, no problems.

What should I do next?

Regards

Platties

Check the file \data\log\error.log. Does it show anything suscpicious? Can you post its contents?

Thanks

Hi VlK,

I’ve posted the error log as requested, any ideas. I cant turn on my windows firewall either, I don’t know if this is related?

Hi,

Still not herd from you. Did a uninstall, but it left some Avast files in Programs! Cant delete them, says a cyclic error, whatever that is. I was going to try your latest version to see if that worked, but until I can remove the old version it seems foolish to try. Please, how do I remove Avast from my computer? I did restart after removal and I was logged on as the administrator?

Regards

Platties

Use the uninstal utility found here http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_uninstall_util.html then reboot and reinstall the latest version of Avast - oops dowload the latest version first and keep it handy on your system

  1. Uninstall avast from Control Panel first (if it works)
  2. Boot
  3. Use Avast Uninstall for complete uninstallation (read http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_uninstall_util.html). If it does not work, boot in Safe Mode and try again.
  4. Boot

You can manually delete the avast folder?

Cyclic [Redundancy Check] Error? If yes, your drive (or filesystem) is probably corrupted.
Try running a disk check.

Thank you very very much, The disk check did the job, but only if scheduled on a restart. The normal one would not complete. Avast is know running with no little red symbol.

Can I ask you help again please. My Windows fire wall will not enable. What I get is Windows firewall settings cannot be displayed because the associated service is not running. Do you want to start the windows Firewall/Internet connection sharing (ICS) service. YES/NO

I click yes. But windows cannot start the Firewall/Internet connection sharing (ICS) service.

Can you help me?

Platties

Could I suggest that you get a software firewall as it will offer a lot more protection than the windows one. There are several free ones around but for a beginner I would suggest Zone Alarm from http://www.majorgeeks.com/download388.html Then we will have a look at the windows problem

For the windows firewall problem go to _ Control Pane - admistrative tools - services - scroll down to windows firewall - highlight it then look to the top left where it should say start the service click this. Then double click the windows firewall service and set to Manual (if you have installed ZA) or Automatic. Does that work ?

ZA installed and working, brilliant.
I did get a meassage from avast on restart saying Avast web shield moduel has compatibility problems with ZA privacy blocking features. But followed the instrutions, disabled the bit that is having a wobble and I now have a working fire wall, thank you.

With the windows bit, I followed your instrutions but got the same meassage as before, Firewall/Internet connection sharing (ICS) service etc. But this time it has Error2:the system cannot find the file specified.

ZA installed and working, Brilliant thank you.

Followed your instrutions but get this.
Windows gives same error message as before but now have additional message, Error2: the system cannot find the file specified.

In that case it may be related to your previous disc problem and that file was corrupted. I’ll have a hunt around and see what programme files it depends upon

I just found this on the ms site can you follow the instructions and post back any error logs related to windows firewall

If the Windows Firewall (WF)/Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) service is unable to start, then it adds entries to the system event log with information about why it could not start. Additionally, audit log events corresponding to changes in Windows Firewall configuration and program requests to open ports are stored in the security event log. To view the system or security event logs, use the Event Viewer snap-in.

To view the entries in the system or security event logs with the Event Viewer snap-in, do the following:

Click Start, click Control Panel, click Performance and Maintenance, click Administrative Tools, and then double-click Event Viewer.

To look for error events for the Windows Firewall (WF)/Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) service, click System in the console tree of the Event Viewer snap-in.

In the details pane of the Event Viewer, look for Error events.

To look for audit events corresponding to applications or service attempting to open ports, click Security in the console tree of the Event Viewer snap-in.

In the details pane of the Event Viewer, look for events with the event IDs 849, 850, and 861

This is the page I got it from http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/winxppro/support/wftshoot.mspx#E1LAC

Hi, Sorry for delay in replying, been away.

I can’t paste the results you ask for, tried everything I know, but just wont work. Anyway, what’s there is lots of Error logs, listed as disk 7, by far the majority. Workstation 5727. Service control Manager 7001, 7026, 7024 & 7023.

This is double Dutch to me, what doses it tell you?

Thanks for your help.
