I have recently updated avast home to the last version (4.6.652)
The problem now is that I can’t open Hotmail in Outlook Express.
When I disable Web Shield everything is back to normal.
The last version of avast did not have any problem.
Does anyone have a solution?
Are you sure that it is avast! the problem here?
I’ve heard that Hotmail changed a little when it allowed only ‘paid’ versions.
Can you send mail by Hotmail? Or you can’t receive and send…
When you’re checking Hotmail, does any special process is started? I mean, if you click CTRL-ALT-DEL, can you see any different ‘program’ running there? If so, you’ve be able to add the line IgnoreProcess= into avast4.ini file to exclude it…
Hotmail/Yahoo is not a pop3 email service (unless you pay for pop service), it is web based (so the Internet Mail provider doesn’t directly protect it). Web based email is simply your email being viewed in the same way you browser the internet. The pages (that display your email) are downloaded into your Temporary Internet folder, just like regular web pages and displayed on your browser screen.
The Standard Shield will scan your files (as they are downloaded into your Temporary Internet folder) when sensitivity is set to High. You can round this ‘problem’ using 3rd party applications to download the Hotmail messages through the pop3 server (PopHotmail, for instance).
Thanks for the reply.
I am sure avast is the problem.
At first I thought hotmail had change there settings too, but that wasn’t it.
I can’t do anything while WebShield is running with hotmail, it doesn’t synchronize.
When I turn Webshield off, I can do everything with it, the problem came after the newest update I’m afraid.
The aren’t any other processes in Taskmanager then before. ???
While I understand the frustration of users experiencing problems with access to Hotmail (or Yahoo) following upgrades to Avast I think it necessary to add that this is not the experience of all Avast users.
I am using Windows XP SP2 with Avast 4.6.652 and I have, in the past few days, been conducting tests with the HTTP-DAV (also known as WebDav) access to Hotmail.
I have been using Outlook Express 6 to access my Hotmail account using HTTP-DAV with no problems with Webshield active.
I have also accessed my Hotmail account through HTTP-DAV via Hotmail Popper providing conversion for POP3 & SMTP to/from my Thunderbird mail client and with Avast configured (Internet Mail Provider) to scan the POP3/SMTP streams. This has all proved very successful.
Lukas - I may be proved wrong but I suspect the interjection of Yahoo comments in this thread is a “red herring”. I am fairly certain that HTTP-DAV access to Yahoo is not supported. I believe paid Yahoo accounts are provided with direct POP3 access.
It may be advisable to ensure that the thread initiator is accessing
Hotmail via HTTP-DAV (but then you have the logging information to help you do that).
As far as I can see (in a quick look on my system) Webshield is not getting involved in the HTTP-DAV accesses. Could there perhaps be some other proxy server involved here that does attract the interest of the Webshield?
I was wondering if there may have been any changes or upgrades to a Firewall at the same time as the Avast upgrade. Accessing HTTP-DAV with OE will require that OE is granted direct outbound access whereas the POP3 access would be proxy’d by Avast.
I’m sure the Avast team must be running HTTP-DAV enabled accounts as well but if I can assist with any logs - just ask.
Sorry for bringing up that Yahoo thing - I just saw someones post here in this forum with the same problem like Hotmail user - it was not my own experience! So skip it …
Nevertheless Hotmail HTTP mail over OE still doesn´t work with avast, but thats just a minor problem…
My hotmail via OE has stopped working completely with or without webshield since
latest upgrade.
Webshield on - hotmail/OE just hangs forever
Webshield off - hotmail/OE displays these errors.
Unable to poll for new messages on your HTTP server. Account: ‘Hotmail’, Server: ‘http://services.msn.com/svcs/hotmail/httpmail.asp’, Protocol: HTTPMail, Server Response: ‘’, Port: 0, Secure(SSL): No, Socket Error: 12029, Error Number: 0x800CCC0E

I can access hotmail directly no problem, but not with OE.
I seem to recall that policy was for new hotmail accounts - Ive been using hotmail with OE for years and now I cant, so what has changed in avast to disable this for me and others but not everyone.
I can still use it for as long as it takes but that will change.
I have read somewhere that the changes will take place at April.
I can still use it in OE but not for long I’m afraid.
Avast has solved the problem in the last update, so thats not the problem anymore.
If you still want to use hotmail in OE, you have to pay for it or get a Gmail account ;D
