How can I optionally start avast?

I would like to sometimes start Avast, and sometimes not. I do a lot of work on one of my machines and I only connect it to the Internet every 2-3 weeks. When I start up the computer I can ask myself the question of whether I want to run
C:\PROGRA~1\Avast4\ashDisp.exe but
when I try to make the change to the registry in
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
to prevent ashDisp.exe from running, I get “cannot write changes” errors.

How can I control if I want to start the program?

Just by removing that entry will not prevent avast from starting. Avast has several services that start with the computer, other than what you see in the registry.

However, if you can’t delete that entry in your registry, it may be because you’re not an administrator, because you should be able to do so.

Does Avast really have to be turned off though? I’m sure it can’t be slowing your system down that much…
