How do I activate resident shield?

Hi, I’ve installed and registered Avast 4.7 free home edition, and got it to scan my hard drive on my Win98 PC, but I can’t seem to get the resident shield nor the email scanner to work. In the On-Access Scanner, whether I select Internet Mail, p2p shield, standard shield or web shield, when I click Start it asks if I want to persist the changes, I click Yes, and it says ‘The operation could not be completed.’ How do I activate it and get it to work? Thanks,

sky

If you start avast! Log Viewer, are there any error messages? (in the Error cathegory, for example)

No, it shows no errors.

What folder did you install avast! into (i.e. what’s the full path)?

It’s in C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\

This contains 4 folders - Data, English, Images and Setup.

What was your previous av, and how was it uninstalled?

Previously I used AVG free edition. Their newer version caused bootup probs with my Win98 PC. I uninstalled it using add/remove programs from control panel as well as its user settings, its no longer on my PC as far as I can see.

I’m guessing you followed the uninstall instructions here

If so good. You could try an uninstall/reinstall of avast using the avast removal tool, just to be sure.

Download the utility http://avast.com/eng/avast-uninstall-utility.html ,save it to your desktop, easy to find there  also download the current version of avast if you don’t all ready have it.

  1. uninstall avast via add/remove
  2. reboot
  3. run the removal utility, make sure the folder that avast is in is in the small white box
  4. reboot
  5. reinstall

You said:

  3. run the removal utility, make sure the folder that avast is in is in the small white box
  4. reboot
  5. reinstall

But after uninstalling Avast using Add/Remove, then there’s nothing left to run the removal tool on, unless I’m misunderstanding. Add/remove seemed to remove it all, so there’s no more Avast folder to put into the white box.

Okay, if there isn’t a folder then add/remove must have done the job.

So all that’s left is reinstall. Download the latest version here

Update afterwards.
