How do I completely uninstall Avast Free version

I uninstalled avast free version a number of months ago. However when updating win 10 recently I get a message that anti virus avast needs to be updated or un-installed. At this point it is not listed in the windows all programs dialog. When I try to install it again I get this error: “The application was unable to start correctly (0xc000007b). Click OK to close the application.”

This is frustrating. How do I completely uninstall this application so that I can update Windows 10 ?

Download the Avast Uninstall Utility to your Desktop http://www.avast.com/en-gb/uninstall-utility

Run the Uninstall Utility and accept the reboot to safe mode
Once complete reboot your system.
