How do I install licence for MAC OS X

I asked for and was sent a licence. The email began

Dear avast! user,

Your registration of avast! free antivirus was successful. Your license key must now be inserted into the program.

Your license key is:

---------- cut here ----------
XXXXXXX

So how do I enter the key, it asks me for a file, there’s nothing that I can paste the key into.

avast! free is for Windows and Linux, not for Mac.
There isn’t a free version for Mac.
