How do I know if there are actually definitions in Avast's definitions?

I asked this, and someone answered a DIFFERENT question, so I’m rephrasing it. Maybe my meaning will be clearer.

I am concerned that a virus may have wiped out Avast’s definitions, and that since then it has only appeared to download updates. I once had that happen with a different antivirus program.

I do now want to know whether Avast tells me it updated definitions. I want to know if there are actual Avast virus definitions on my computer.

How do I actually check that the Avast virus definitions are actually on my computer?

Thanks for answering the question.

You can download the whole VPS database here: http://files.avast.com/iavs5x/vpsupd.exe

the program have ways of checking that the file it downloads is correct…and not corrupt

what virus does that wipe the update definition? can it be done? or could it be like pondus says it’s a corrupted update file.

if you think our infected why not let a malware expert have alock at your computer just in case.
