how do I prevent this 'ms outlook/exchange plug in' pop message from appearing?

Title says it all. Every few minutes a small pop up screen appears. It says ‘Avast Home ms outlook/exchange plug in’. It stays up for about 2-3 seconds. I can’t seem to find a way in the settings of Avast to stop it from appearing…

Any suggestions?

Thanks!

Are you actually using MS Outlook (not outlook express) ?

If so, from the Outlook/Exchange provider, Customize, Advanced tab, uncheck the Show splash screen when the provider is loading, see image.

Thansk DavidR, for your reply.

I don’t use Exchange, or at least not consciously ;D

I use Outlook only for the calendar, not for email…

No problem, glad I could help.

Well the Exchange bit is (Outlook or Exchange really) avast detects that you have MS Outlook installed and activates the Outlook/Exchange provider and plug-in for Outlook. So if you don’t use Outlook for email, you could Terminate the Outlook/Exchange provider and answer Yes to the persist the changes question.

Where do I do that? I couldn’t find a setting in Avast (nor in Outlook)…

Just noticed you have over 35,000 posts…that’s amazing!!

Left click the ‘a’ blue icon.
Click “Details” button to expand.
Choose Outlook plugin at left and Terminate (or Stop) button.
Choose “Yes” to persist the changes.

It is under the secondary window in my previous image, as Tech mentions how to get there.

I’ve been on the forums for some time now and a reasonable amount of time available, 35,000+ isn’t that many Tech has 45,000+ ;D

Thanks to you both! (I didn’t see the image before).

I don’t have the blue icon but found that I can make that appear in the system tray and with that I was able to turn off the outlook thingy.

Now I can finally watch a movie without the pop-up appearing every few minutes!

Well the avast ‘a’ icon should be there all the time:
avast! icon missing - As a temporary measure until this is resolved you can create a desktop shortcut for this file C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashDisp.exe (the avast icon and interface to the providers). Right click on the file and select Send To, Desktop (create shortcut). You will need to run this after each boot until the problem is resolved.

What other security based software do you have that might block new startup entries, e.g. Spybot S&D (TeaTimer), AdAware (AdWatch), SpySweeper, Spyware Doctor (StartUpGuard or OnGuard), PrevX, WinPatrol, ProcessGuard, etc. ?

Have (or did) you another AV installed in this system, if so what was it and how did you get rid of it ?

Check the option in the Appearance tab of Program Settings.

Or Make a link to ashdisp.exe in your startup folder. I wouldn’t try this as a first option (but a final one) as you won’t be able to find the true cause of the problem.

Is there a solution to this issue if you DO use Outlook for email? Silly pop-up is visually annoying & impacts work-flow by stealing focus from some app’s making it doubly annoying >:(

Any help much appreciated - it’s driving me nuts.

Avast 5.0.594 | MS Office '07 | Windows 7 Pro/32

PS Off topic: why do we need this pop-up in the first place?

This topic besides being almost a year old, is for an old version of avast, so it would have been best to create your own new topic.

There is an equivalent setting in the Mail Shield, Expert Settings, behaviour, MS Outlook Only section.

If you can’t find this then create a new topic and we will try to help you there rather than in this very old topic.

Thanks for the tip & sorry about the missposting (double DOH :-[ )

No problem. Welcome to the forums.
