Dumb question of the day: How do I get Avast to show again in my tray icon at startup?
I had to shut down Avast 4.8 Home to run some malware removal software. I have yet to figure out how to start it back up. Please help me, I am ignorant! :-[
My memory may be fuzzy, but I believe I right-clicked the tray icon which brought up a window. There were 6-8 components (email, web, etc) and I turned each one off. I believe there was an option to make them stay off at reset. I selected that as well.
Well thee should still be an avast icon on the system tray so you can reverse that process, so something else has gone on.
As a work around you can launch the avast icon. As a temporary measure until this is resolved you can create a desktop shortcut for this file C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashDisp.exe (the avast icon and interface to the providers). Right click on the file and select Send To, Desktop (create shortcut). You will need to run this after each boot until the problem is resolved. Or you can locate the file and just double click it.
Once you have the avast icon on the system tray you can double click that, which will open the on-access Scanner window. If you see a button called Details… click that and it will display all 8 providers on the left (if you are a avast pro user), you will have to scroll to see them all.
Select the Standard Shield provider icon first, the Start button should be the only one not greyed out, click that and answer Yes to the question.
Repeat that exercise for the other providers that you need to enable. You won’t need to enable the Outlook/Exchange provider unless you are using MS Outlook (not express). Once you have done that reboot and see if the avast icon comes back to the system tray and let us know the outcome.
