You can either do it through add/remove programs in the control panel or if that doesnt work please download the avast! uninstall utility found here
http://www.avast.com/eng/avast-uninstall-utility.html

The correct procedure is to remove avast! through the add/remove function - reboot
and then run the avast uninstall utility to remove any left over registry information etc.
i have the same problem i cannot reinstall avast and i cannot disable, it is not in add remove but shows up in the registry with about 6 other related programs none of which can i remove due to self protect avast is not running (i have AVG6) now everytime i start my pc i have to wait while avast loads a popup to advise i have no anti-virus cover at all and to take out paid version or reregister (none of which work) or “other options” which should remove avast from my PC which it does’nt! it is right back there when i next start up. i liked avast when i first used it but when windows service patch three downloaded as an update it did’nt seem to function correctly (probably was SP3 which i have since removed) so i decided to uninstall avast with the intention of reloading, which is where i am now! it does’nt completely uninstall and will not reload all this was about two months ago and i am stuck with ever since, the avast uninstall utility does not download either, says something about “spawning” whatever that is, if anyone can help i would be grateful! the popup slows down “start up” while it loads which annoys me!
sorry to be so long winded i am pretty much a novice with computers and don’t know how to get to the settings, or how to to resolve it “safe mode” to remove self protect, and there is no bubble to right click on to disable self protect
Hope someone can help before i go completely nuts! Regards Max…
Uninstall AVG, boot.
Uninstall avast from Control Panel, if it’s not there, use the uninstall tool (if necessary, do it booting the computer at Safe Mode).

You mention that you installed SP3. I’m assuming that before you installed SP3, you were running SP2. You also said you subsequently uninstalled SP3. It’s my understanding that this does not completely restore back to SP2 as it was (one area if my memory is correct relates to the Windows installer) and may be a source of some problems.
If what Tech has recommended doesn’t work, or as an alternative, you could try un-installing AVG, rebooting and then reinstall the current version of Avast.
I have a number of PC’s running XP-Home and XP-Pro, all updated to SP3 and all working very nicely with Avast 4.8.1201 (one also with the beta version 4.8.1218).
Thank everybody for replying to my problem, but i have done as suggested by “tech” even uninstalling zone alarm (which i have not re-installed)and still have the same problem i cannot uninstall or re-install avast in the registry i get “access denied” In avast uninstall program i get something like “spawning” as previously stated and will not download, i must say i have disabled (unchecked) everything to do with avast to try and stop the cursed pop-up from avast to tell me my 60 day trial is over, but nothing seems to work! if i could download avast i would willingly keep it, but at the moment i have no option other than AVG8 :
regards Max…
I suggest an installation from the scratch:
I have done as tech suggested, avast is not in control panel or add remove, i managed to get up safe mode only to find that IE had an error that stopped it downloading and so did firefox, for some reason or other, my intention was to load the avast uninstaller with google which i could not do without a browser! but i got into the registry set up and was able to disable most of the avast support programs but could not disable ashell.dll got the message (cannot delete access denied) and three reasons why this could be so
However on start up the the avast pop-up informing my 60 days were up etc. had gone which was the main reason i started these postings in the first place! so it was a result after all,i have not tried to download avast since, i am scared i might get the nagging pop-up back! So i would like to thank all you people that kindly posted suggestions and especially tech for his help in mostly solving this problem that was driving me mad
Kindest regards Max…
