How do you abort a boot-time scan?

Could someone please tell me how to terminate the boot-time scan? It’s been running for over 3 hours with no sign of end in stop; it’s just been a continuous series of dots being added to the screen. how long is supposed to run? i’ve tried reseting the computer but it jumps back into the scan on reboot. i’ve tried entering windows in safe mode but safe mode’s not working either.
• What operating system are you using? winxp
• What version of avast! are you using? most recent xp version, can’t get into windows to find out.
• What version of VPS file are you using? most recent xp version, can’t get into windows to find out.
• What is your basic hardware configuration? (e.g. Intel Pentium IV 2.80GHz, 1024 MB RAM)

If anyone knows how to stop it, i’d be incredibly grateful! Thanks for your help!

Series of dots? It means it wasn’t even started yet… it’s initializing the OS registry, or something like that. Strange… this phase should take only a few seconds.
Please try the “Last known good” configuration; the boot-time scanner shouldn’t be scheduled there.

thanks for the tip. i wound up doing a completely cold boot, and that seemed to remedy the problem. It was very strange, tho!
