Hi! I’ve got a question about how avast! handles viruses found in imap accounts.
We recently encountered a “ghost” virus that would only appear during nightly scans. Avast! and the event log showed the path and file to be: “C:\Program Files\Common Files\System\MSMAPI\1033\text.doc .pif\text.doc .pif”. The file “text.zip” was also found in a .pst file for an imap account. Every night avast! would find text.zip the content to be infected, as well as the file in the 1033 directory. Every morning we would look for the file in the 1033 directory without finding a trace of it.
We ran a full scan of the computer one morning, but avast! found it clean. It’s like a vampire; it only comes out at night. Also, we found files of the same size as the text.zip file in the virus chest that were found in “\c0009\c$\Documents and Settings\dowens\Local Settings\Temp_avast4_” but weren’t listed as a problem during the scan. We take them to be temporary copies of the file made by avast! when deleting them.
How does Avast handle imap email accounts? Why could it find the virus at night, but not find it during the day? And what are the files found in the folder avast4? Note: the attachment was never opened.
Thanks for any info!
