My wife uses an android tablet, and likes to download games and such from google play, she doesnt really check out the ratings or permissions when she installs the games, if the game looks interesting, she installs it. She has avast loaded, will this be enough in protecting against malware, spyware and such, as she also does email, internet and banking from the tablet too…
No Anti-virus is ever 100% effective in detections and reasonable care should always be used when on the net.
Downloading games without even reading the reviews first is not what I would call reasonable care :o anything that is going to be installed on any Computer/Tablet/Phone should always be researched first, no Anti-virus will protect from consistant human negligence.
With your reasoning no one would ever need an antivirus, because you would expect everyone to “research” every file they get. If as you say one needs to research every download from google play, then you are saying avast is useless?
AMS is certainly not useless. Well, only if you ignore its warnings.
This is why i am asking how effective it is
Very effective…!!
No I did not say that, I said due care and responsibility should always be shown when on the net and downloading things without even checking reviews at the least is a disaster waiting to happen.
Avast is one of the best in detections but like I said no anti-virus is ever 100% effective so care should always be shown.
One cant always go by the reviews on google play to how good a game is, thats why my wife just installs and gauges for herself
Reading the reviews is just a first step in reassurance that what you are about to download is actually what it is supposed to be, it’s got nothing to do with ratings.
I do check the reviews on what she has downloaded when i get home, but ive heard cases where if google spots malware they pull the app, how would one determine if they still had this rogue app on their device when google pulls it
Hi,
I think that Google has a way of automatically uninstalling an app from all (connected) devices so in that case it should be removed from yours as well. If you have AMS installed, all shields enabled and your wife is using one of the supported browser, the device should be reasonably safe.
Filip
Hello,
The device isnt rooted, so only the shields that can be enabled without root is enabled, and she uses the default android browser. Is this sufficient?, and 99% effective?
Hi,
that should be sufficient, yes. About the effectiveness, you would have to check some independent tests.
Filip
Hi LemonScrub,
As some replies above, I want to indicate that an antivirus is just a tool to keep your safe from known malware from the Internet, but not at all. It also depend on the users’s awareness and carefulness.
Before download an app, I usually check around the comments, rating to see what users think about this app. It can keep you up to 70% safe.
With AMS, I have been using it for months and I like its detection.
If you want to test, you can go to Google Play and search for “Eicar test”, then download this app. You will se what AMS works ;).
