That hardly matters what matters is that it is free ‘now’ as far as I’m aware avast has always had a free home version. A little more about Alwil http://www.avast.com/eng/company.html.

Alwil policy was always to release a Home (restricted) version of avast for free and get money from the server versions and the Professional one.
