How good is avast4 home edition?

If the infected files are in fact in one(or more) of you Restore Points you should turn off System Restore and scan just to make sure. Windows likes to protect the Restore Points, even from antivirus programs.

After you scan, be sure to turn System Restore back on.

Thanks very much denro for your kind post.

dadkins:

There were TWO files with the same Trojan. One of them, I ve mentioned above, the other one was quite similar too. So, I think tht those files were related to “System Restore.”

Now, I’m going to act upon your advice, and see, may be, what happens!

Thank you everyone!

I don’t get this… I’ve used Norton and Pc-cillin both, but when it catches a virus, it keeps track of it. I mean, they show the history in some log file(when the virus was found, cleaned, name, etc). And I caught TWO infected files with avast, but there is no mention of them in the whole program. The log file is empty. Does avast not store the history automatically or does it require some special action to do so??

::slight_smile:

Right click the avast! icon in the system tray and look under “Log Viewer”> “Warning”. You should see the log of the removed nasties.

It caught the infected files, when I restarted my PC after installing avast. It asked me to perform a boot scan, and I did, then on detection, I simply “deleted” the files.

But the log file is empty. Nothing there at all!

If they were picked up in the first boot scan before windows loads and the 32 bit Avast starts, they probably won’t show in the log file. Anything picked up in the future by a scan or resident action from within Windows will show in the log file. Also, the boot scan will pick up the infections in the Restore points and your action to delete them was correct. It should not be necessary to also turn off System Restore and do another scan: the boot scan is essentially the scan with system restore not yet running. If you do shut off, even temporarily, system restore from within Windows, you will lose all of your restore points and be starting from scratch when you re-enable system restore. Avast, by making available the boot scan, saves one from having to lose all the restore points, you have only lost the infected ones (unless you already took the other poster’s advice to disable system restore.) You will enjoy avast.

Did you click on the “Warning” button in avast! Log Viewer?

dadkins, yes, I checked tht. Nothing there at all!

denro, yes, unfortunately, I’ve lost all the restore points. :-[

I have this semilar problem too,…Avast caught the “myDoom” in the email,…but in the log no sign bout this virus even begin caught,… i checked all the boxes,…

Hmmm, Maybe it doesn’t record from boot scans. Sorry, I can’t remember if I’ve ever had a boot scan. I just figured you were like me and didn’t know about the different logs. :-[

My bad!

When Vlk gets here he will know.

John it wouldn’t be in the log view that the infection would have been in. if you start the AVAST and go into settings, go to REPORT FILE and make sure it is turned on. Avast by default does not turn on this option which is where the report would be of what was infected or not infected during a scan. the default directory for the reports is C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\DATA\report.

Best Regards. (man i can’t spell correctly tonight)

Thanx,…I had enable this option a few days ago, after I noticed that Avast didn’t log the infected attachment with “MyDoom”.

I will see if it logs next time I get an infection. I do not receive that many virusses anymore as I used to have,…maybe 1 every 5 months or so

I used McAfee before, and I have noticed this:

  • avast! takes much less disk space (huge difference)
  • I sometimes had long hangs/pauses with McAfee
  • I notice no slowdown with avast! compared to McAfee
  • The updates come ofter and of course they are free

Only thing I don’t like is the “X-Antivirus:” and “X-Antivirus-Status:” tags avast! adds to incoming and outgoing mails. They take up space, and no one reads them (I’d like to have an option to turn them off - I’d rather use the signatures). Should be so easy, only an extra checkbox on each service (POP, SMTP and IMAP). Hope they’ll fix it one nice day

What status tags? I don’t get any status tags unless I set those options in the on access scanner. Please explain!

Douglas

Not in the message itself. But choose to look at the headers of the message, and you will see tags like this (the example is a test message send to myself - also both in- and outbound):

X-Antivirus: avast! (VPS 29.01.04), Outbound message
X-Antivirus-Status: Clean
X-Antivirus: avast! (VPS 29.01.04), Inbound message
X-Antivirus-Status: Clean

I think there are enough headers in messages allready, and I don’t need this info on my incoming messages (I get a message from avast! if they’re not clean anyway). And for outgoing messages, a notice in the message body is better (not a lot of people even know about the headers).

hi…i have xp professional, and no probs here, the only prob i currently have is a nagging red avast pop up window telling us that my current registration is about to expire
…but checked out all the faq’s and just says; after one year you need to re-register…so my question is, do i have to uninstall my current avast software, or can i just get another registration number and apply it to my existing avast progamme?..and if i can, then how do we go about doing it? …any assistance would be much appreciated

If you either contact the on-line Share*it payment processing they should have sent you your registration key and email, etc. there may also be renewal discount, so you should contact them directly or contact sales @ avast.com (without the spaces).

You don’t have to uninstall, when you get your new registration key you enter it as you did before.

No need to uninstall, you can just change the number.
