How is the money made?

If i do not make a company money, i am the money. With that in mind, how does Avast make money off me when i am using the free Mac OS X version? Is my information stored or sold or something?

avast free is just one of many products. avast does have “paid” products.

I understand they make money from other products and services but not from the users like me that use a free version.
Since time and money did go into the development of the product, where is their return of investment?
