I just installed avast! Free on a friend’s computer on a remote area where internet is extremely slow.
The default installation of avast! Free 8’s VPS is dated May 9, 2013. Automatic update seems to download forever with no download progress at all.
I tried to download manual update from http://www.avast.com/download-update . Took me approximately 47 minutes to download the update file. When I tried to install it, it says VPS database is already up to date.
How come May 9, 2013 VPS database is up to date? It’s almost 4 months old. I wonder if manual update is updated at all. I restarted PC and check avast! and database is still dated May 9, 2013. No update has been made. Wasted 47 minutes of waiting for nothing.
Is there any link in which I can download the VPS update files manually? http://www.avast.com/download-update seems to contain obsolete update files. It’s not the latest VPS file as stated on the website.
There was an expired avast! Free 7 installed. I uninstalled it via control panel / add/remove programs. Rebooted the computer, then install version 8.
I wasn’t aware of the removal tools. Is avast’s uninstall not enough to uninstall older versions?
My main concern was actually why the manual updater is outdated. The fact that it said that VPS database is currently updated means that the updater itself is older than the VPS database dated May 9, 2013.
