Which is your avast version? Pro or Home?

With Avast! Home you actually can’t schedule scans for certain times (Only in Pro). However, Avast! is constantly scanning your computer (To see scanning activity left click on the blue Avast! icon in the system tray). You can manually start a full scan using the the local disks button or just pick a file to scan using the folder selection button. I personally do a boot time scan with archive scanning enabled once a week and also do a full scan with my non-resident malware programs Malwarebytes and Superantispyware; this keeps me pretty well covered.

I’ve forgot to say that, in fact, on-demand scanning shouldn’t be that often if you use the resident protection.
