How save is Avast really?

Hy I am or better said I was a Avast user for only 2 Month and got in this time 6 times Viruses via updates from Avast, and for 3 Days when I checked some pages here in Avast to get some Information about new Viruses was one Page infacted with a Scriptvirus better known as a TRJ.Banker.Caw.2 but Avast coun’t find it because it was almost in all its Files infacted. I just than Avira a German Program which showed me all the infacted files. Unfortunately crached my system, because he changed Passwords so that I could not restart. Does anyone else have this probleme or is that maybe because I using the Free Homeedition. I really liked Avast because it seemed for me to be almost the only Virusprotection witch is great against TRJ. But I am worried that I receive again so much Viruses via Updates. And than the thing with notepad.exe which Avast said was a virus, even thought the Avastteam sendet fast new Updates out and it was gone.

How safe is Avast?

Well… not an antivirus is perfect… ::slight_smile:
But avast isn’t bad.

Which changed the passwords? Antivir?
Did you delete the infected files or send them to Quarentine?

This was a false positive already corrected as you say… but, indeed, could have caused some trouble to the users. Sorry.

Avira found the viruses and I put them in Quarantine, some of the files where on for example System Volume Information restore and win32 files but it was to late because the virus changed the passwords and I taked to a person which had exactly the same files infacted with the same viruses. He also useed Avast, that is really strange. It was also Avira which found the information and now he maked an online scan and figured out the this was also a Hacker which already got his password and money from his account. Avast seems not to recognice this scriptvirus, however I just want really to know if anyone else has that much trouble with Avast like I do!

 Hi Kamp :

Just spent the last 20 minutes reading through 2 of your
threads on the landzdown forums .
First off, should ONLY have 1 antiVIRUS program at any
moment in time providing "real-time" protection; your
latest HJT log on Landzdown indicates that you have
Avast, AntiVir, & AVG ALL running on your computer and
providing "real-time" protection; this is a NO - NO . SpyDie
on Landzdown asked you to uninstall 2 of them; since you
like Avast, you should COMPLETELY REMOVE BOTH AntiVir
AND AVG ( NOT the antiSPYWARE program ) as soon as
possible. Having multiple antiVIRUS programs running on
a computer will most likely cause MANY problems.
  This somewhat applies to antiSPYWARE/antiTROJAN
program(s) ; can have multiple ones of this "category"
BUT ONLY 1 should be providing "real-time" protection.
Your Posted Scans on Landzdown are showing MANY
"Tracking cookies", both using Internet Explorer AND
Mozilla's Firefox; they are easily removed on BOTH
Browsers by using the FREE "ATF Cleaner" from :
  http://www.atribune.org/content/view/25/2/ .

I don#t use anymore does programs, because i had to reinstall XP seens the computer didn`t started anymore
Not even in saftymode. I didn’t turned the computer off for 3 days when avira found the viruses, so that i could safe all my files. And than when I tried to follow the advise on Hijackthis the system crached when I turned the computer of and dryed to restart it. But XP send me a Warning days before when I got those Notepad.exe Virus, that some files got wrong overwritten and needet to get repaired with the Renew CD. I couldn’t do that because i couldn’t find the CD now yes but it is too late. And I didn’t post the new found viruses in Landzdown in the forum, because it was for me more important to save my files. Well it doesn’t metter to me anymore, since my system is renewed and I use Avira. I also sometimes let the Online scanner from Trend micro scanning because they are really good. And since Avira and Avast doesn’t work together will I going to dry Avira and see how great this one is.

 Hi Kamp :

"Trojans" are NOT "Viruses"; should be using an
antiTROJAN program, like the FREE version of
  "SUPERantispyware" from www.superantispyware.com .

Hi Kampfmaschiene,

Instead of relying on an anti-virus to save your computer from infection, learn how to avoid infection in the future. (No AV provides 100% protection, so if you are careless you will always get infected in the end!)

http://www.castlecops.com/postlite7736-.html

A nice piece of statistics:

http://virusinfo.info/attachment.php?attachmentid=3519&d=1160680574

These stats are made by VirusTotal results of scanning In The Wild malware caught by consultants at users’ machines while curing.

Key to the table: X line - products, Y line - quantity of infected files, red - detected, strong yellow - heuristically detected, light yellow - suspected.

Antivir is not better than AVAST,i have running Antivir and
its always complain that 139 Files are not to scan.
And this is include windows files.
If i see that Avast all the files and programs of your computer
can scanning,then i think AVAST is better!! 8) 8)

Strange? ::slight_smile:

;D ;D ;D Tech, that means that you will have to sign up for account so you can see the statistics at virusinfo… Except if NickG. posted a wrong link, but i dont think that that is the case here :stuck_out_tongue:

Oh. Strange. %) I thought that the picture as an attachment is viewable anyway.

Here’s the file as an attachment.

Hi NickGolovko,

Could you possibly translate the key foe us?

What do red, yellow and white signify?

Cheers!

I’ve translated it already: see my post " Reply #7 on: November 01, 2006, 10:34:35 AM "

I agree with him, Avira has a top detection and superior heuristic.

Anti polymorphic detection is also excellent: http://www.anti-malware.ru/index.phtml?part=tests&test=polymorphic

At least Avira is very light on memory, avast isn’t so.

Bye :-[

Hi ght1 und Kampfmachiene,

To start off with a very important thing here, remember it is always the user that gets infected. That being said, free AV solutions are mainly for power users. Important are detection rate and whether the free software can remove all of the malware.
Second point no software is a total panacea, I have never come across the wonder free av-solution, but certain formula’s come close. Integration with other anti-malware programs is important, because some av-software is only signature based.
My cocktail of protection: avast resident av, Comodo firewall and ComodoBoClean, DrWebCureIt and ClamAV as non-resident scanners, SAS and a-squared as anti-trojan/spyware solution, SpywareBlaster to protect, ATFCleaner, ClearProg, IECacheCleaner to remove the crap that stays behind.
The difference is often made with support, and I must admit avast has an outstanding support forum, we will see it stays that way,

polonus

This is generally correct, it has a good detection rate and a very good submission process (from what I’ve heard and read). But, sometimes, it fails to. Not a software is perfect. Hope, indeed, the unscheduled avast 5 gets gold soon…
