I added a new HDD disk on my machine, and Avast One is automatically scanning it in background, without me asking for it, or creating / reading any files. I can hear it scrambling and I can also see it in the Task manager. How can I stop this?
As soon as I disable the “File Shield” it stops, but then I’m unprotected. I want scans to take place ONLY when I access a file, not always, not automatically, not on the background.
I searched all Settings, the advanced options etc, the setting is simply missing. I understand this was in Settings according to google/bing searches, but it was removed. What kind of genius product manager REMOVES options to make a product “better”?
First, I’m an Avast user and not an Avast Team member.
If that drive is active then Avast would be scanning that drive in the same way as the primary drive when it is active . This is what on-access antivirus programs do, scan activity, are you generating any activity on that 2nd drive ?
I have two drives on this laptop an SSD primary and I just haven’t noticed this. That said that is my Data Drive so is essentially only active if I’m saving files to that drive.
There is nothing to stop you adding that drive to the Avast Exceptions, as I have done for a specific folder within the D: drive (see attached screenshot), but in doing so you could be leaving that drive at risk, your choice.
Thanks for your reply. It’s an external mechanical HDD drive I connect through USB 3, and that’s how I noticed it, cause it’s a bit noisy.
I then checked Task Manager on windows and I saw it hovers near 30 to 50% usage by some process.
I couldn’t determine exactly which process it was, so I started closing programs and services and when I turned off Avast, it completely stopped!
I then pinned it down to File Shield: when I turn only that one off, it stops scrambling my disk. When I turn it on, it starts immediately again. That’s how I noticed it.
I’m not accessing any files from that disk, nor executing any programs from it (its a data disk). And it doesn’t stop in like a few minutes, it’s a huge disk and I think it wants to scan the whole thing, which is awful.
On the File Shield main page, it says that’s it’s only checking when you access/execute a file from a disk. It’s obviously not respecting that, and I wouldn’t know if it wasn’t a mechanical noisy drive on my desk.
I hope someone from Avast takes a look at this issue, chase it’s very annoying and raises suspicions…
I didn’t see any reply before it was moderated as you say.
Posts that are flagged for moderation are usually hidden from view prior to any moderation. But I can usually see if a post has been flagged for moderation and ignore the flag and view it (given my time on the forums helping).
I the last few days I haven’t seen any posts flagged for moderation (from the original post). Any new posts in topics that I have contributed, I get notified (as I have for this reply), none seen. Weird.
The notification said that it was flagged automagically, going through review. Or maybe they really didn’t like what I wrote, that’s it’s spooky and raises suspicious, the fact that Avast is constantly scrambling my disks without me accessing it. I hope they bring it back, if they’re innocent.
Very strange, this is the first I have heard of automatic flagging I have seen post with lots of aggression, swearing and attitude and they have remained.
However, if removed it I can’t imagine it is kept in some form of repository (with lots of reference data) so that could be restored at some time in the future.
