I have the newest version of avast (downloaded last night) and want to know if it is possible to permanently disable avast from scanning specific things like Photoshop and My Pictures and My Documents folders in Windows XP SP2?
when I download a photo off of the internet and save it, avast scans that photo, correct?
when I upload photos from my camera and save them, those photos are scanned correct?
when I open an email and download a photo sent to me and save it, that photo is scanned correct?
So if the above is true, then all these photos are already scanned and safe, correct?
My PC is old with a small hard drive and any antivirus slows it down more, especially when I am running Photoshop and looking at thousands of photos, so if these photos are all previously scanned and clean, then I see no reason for avast to keep scanning them over and over again all the time. So is it safe and possible to disable avast from constantly scanning photos I have saved? If yes, please give clear, specific instructions on how to disable for Photoshop and My Pictures and My Documents folders because I’m not too technical.
Also, the same question for My Documents folder…
if I download a PDF file or other word file from the internet and save it, that has been scanned, correct?
so how to disable constant scanning of these types of files and My Documents folder?
Its your choice to risk it but you only have to add the photoshop program file to the exclusions in the file system shield and the same with your pictures folder.
They will still be scanned when you run an on demand scan as you wouldn’t want to exclude them from that as well.
As i mentioned earlyer you need to open up realtime shields / filesystem shield / expert settings / exclusions, then use the browse button to navigate to the photoshop program file, tick the box and ok to add, do the same with your personal pictures libary.
Okay, I tried to browse to find “My Documents” in advanced to check it but when I checked it, my C drive automatically got checked too. That’s the whole hard drive, right? Then further down on the list is “Pam’s Documents” (my name) so is this the one to check so the whole C drive isn’t included?
Also, I can’t find Photoshop anywhere on the drop down list, so where is the Photoshop program located, in a sub-menu? Which one? Thanks!
Yes you dont want to exclude the whole drive, just the sub folder where your pictures are stored ( probably your name then pictures ) sorry i dont have an xp here to do a screenshot with, photoshop will be a sub folder of program files.
Okay, (found Photoshop, thanks) I scrolled down to “Pam’s Documents” and then also to just “My Pictures” but no matter what box I check in My Pictures or My Documents the local C Drive box also gets checked automatically but that box is grey in color with a check mark and the others I check are a white box with a check mark.
Yes that is correct, the c drive folder get highlighted because of another sub folder inside which relates to your user pictures.
If you open the + on C drive you will see the highlighted subfolder path
Okay, it seems to be working because now when I open Photoshop and My Pictures the orange avast ball in the system tray DOES NOT SPIN, so does that mean that it was successful?
WOW, now my pictures opens so fast as does Photoshop!
One last question please: I downloaded aswClear and the new avast setup to my desktop last night, did the uninstall and installed new avast, so can I now delete both of these from my desktop? Or do I save the avast setup somewhere even though it’s already installed? Thanks again! You people are so helpful to newbies.
It alright to leave them on your system, never know if you might need them again one day.
I stick all my current downloaded install files on my external drive for safe keeping.
