How to exclude a file from real-time protection

Hi,

After checking my event logs in Windows Vista I noticed lots of errors and warning generated by Avast! as shown below.

AAVM - scanning error: x_AavmCheckFileDirectEx: avfilesScanReal of C:\ProgramData\Aqua Computer\aquasuite\database\aquasuitedata.mdb failed, 00000005.

The file generating the scanning error is part of a software used by my water cooling unit. Is there any way I can exclude this file from the real-time protection so I don’t have to get all these errors and warnings in the Windows event logs?

Thanks in advance for your input guys!

Windows file system Error 5 (00000005) = Access is denied.

So avast is denied access to that database file.

Personally I keep my nose out of the logs as for the most part the content is verbose and not to helpful to a user, more so for a developer. Only if I experience a problem with avast or hard errors are displayed to the screen do I look in the logs.

So are you getting any errors displayed to the screen or other avast problems ?

If not I wouldn’t worry about this.

Thought it is possible to exclude from scans, C:*\database\aquasuitedata.mdb the wildcard * saves having to type or past the full path.

You can add it to the exclusions lists:
Standard Shield, Customize, Advanced, Add and
Program Settings, Exclusions (right click the avast ’ a ’ icon)

No I don’t get any on-screen error messages nor any other problems, just feels a bit annoying having the logfiles fill up with this error message.

I know about the exclusion feature and I’ve tried it, problem is it doesn’t seem to work for the realtime protection/on-access protection but only for the other scanning modes which puzzles me - maybe one of the developers could comment on that?

It isn’t an error as such it is just reporting a file that couldn’t be scanned.

What exactly did you put in the standard shield’s exclusions ?
Because without that information, no one can offer any advice as to why it might not be working.

Did you try what I suggested C:*\database\aquasuitedata.mdb ?

I’ve tried both with the exact filename (which seems like the best option in a case like this where the problem only is one single file) but I’ve also tried using this mask

C:\ProgramData\Aqua Computer\aquasuite\database*.mdb

Could try what you suggest but I don’t see how that would do any difference and especially when pressing the Help button in Avast! for the exclusion screen tells you that

“It is important to keep in mind that these exclusions affect all tasks, except for the resident protection. If you want to set the exclusion for a single task only, you have to edit the particular task.”

So my question remains, why can’t you exclude file(s) for the resident protection in Avast!, is it just me who can’t find where to do it or isn’t that option available and if so…any plans implementing it?

I told you you have to add it to the Standard Shield, Customize, Advanced, Add, exclusions, in my first reply

So you have to open the Standard Shield provider, left click the avast icon (click the Details button if displayed), select the Standard Shield provider and action as above.

Sorry, I didn’t realize these were different settings but I assumed they were only two different ways getting to the exclusions list. I have now added the file generating these messages to the exclusion list for the Standard Shield and it will be interesting to see if that will stop the messages.

Thanks for your help!

You’re welcome.

So did this work?

The reason I ask is that I am considering subscription to Avast for my WHS network to replace McAfee. The trial version doesn’t have this Pro function. One reason is that I want access to a ‘Trusted Program’ list. For DavidR, 2 reasons.

  1. I have some utility programs which always are detected as Adware. However they are stripped of the links to the real adware and have never given me any trouble. I haven’t been able to find any freeware to do the same functions as efficiently.

  2. I’ve had incidents with my Car PC front end shell being identified and deleted by updated Virus database. It took over a week to get a patch for the database until another update.

McAfee (and others) are so dumbed down for domestic use that a ‘hobbyist’ has to use their Enterprise version.

Cheers

Martin

It worked just fine

Thanks, looks like a move of subscription next month
