It’s EXTREMELY annoying to have pdfs opened with this useless browser and I wouldn’t mind getting rid of it entirely as it’s caused me so much aggravation already.
What can I do to STOP this?

In addition to Eddy’s information you can also change/uninstall Avast Component/tools
Take into account that everybody is trying to “get the default app status”: Windows, Edge, Chrome, Firefox… Almost any update of these browsers is recalling the status and the question come again…

I had already unchecked all “associations”, but that didn’t help, maybe browser/mail settings. It took me a while to figure out that it’s apparently impossible to deactivate or uninstall this browser from Avast and that you have to go to the CONTROL PANEL – UNINSTALL programs and there you can then CHANGE the install to uninstall the darn thing.
All should be good as soon as I restart.
PS: HAVING TO TYPE LETTERS FROM AN UNREADABLE CAPTCHA IS REALLY ANNOYING FOR A REGISTERED USER!

This is an anti-spam measure and by its nature has to be difficult to be effective. It is only there for your first three post.
Not sure what you mean by a Registered User - if it means a registered avast user - the support forums are somewhat different. They can be viewed without issue, but to either post or view certain areas (user profile info, etc.) you have to be logged on.
