I am using Avast! on a computer that has no e-mail client and no IM client, so I have turned off those protections as there is nothing to protect. But now, since the version upgrade, there is an alert triangle over the Avast! icon in the systray because it says my system is unprotected. This is clearly false. How do I get rid of the triangle?
You can go to settings → status bar and uncheck the relevant things that you don’t need.

Thanks! I missed unchecking IM there when I set it up. All fixed now.
You’re welcome
Not quite correct, not having an email client doesn’t mean you have no need of that protection. Trojan spambots come with their own little smtp function to be able to send spam.
So should there ever be a hidden or undetected trojan spambot on your system the Mail Shield should be able to detect these emails being sent and alert. This could be your first indication that you have this malware on your system.
For me since it isn’t being used for normal circumstances it would be idle not consuming much in the way of resources. Not only that I would suggest setting the Mail Shield, Expert Settings, Sensitivity section, Heuristic sensitivity to High.
On reflection, I have to agree with DavidR.
Having had this particular infection myself with an undetected spambot using my pc as a base for sending out spam, and the mail shield was the thing that alerted me to it…and is the reason I came here
