How to install Avast Free Anti-Virus

Hi all,

im trying to install avast free anti-virus right now and find its quite complicated to get it running. I used to use Avira before and got annoyed by the frequent ad-popups, so i decided to use avast from now on. After installing avast by online setup, i restarted my pc and it says i am not protected and vulnarable (the service is not running). I opened the GUI and tried to start the service by clicking on the “start”-button in that red area - nothing happened. Then i clicked on “solve problems” and nothing happened again. Ok, so how to start the service and get protected by avast ?

Regards

First remove old AV http://www.avast.com/faq.php?article=AVKB11#artTitle

1st do what Pondus mentioned. Avira and Avast will interfere with each other

  1. Download these two programs: avast uninstall utility via here http://www.avast.com/en-nz/uninstall-utility and Avast Cleanup Tool via here https://onedrive.live.com/?cid=94a12102e5094675&id=94A12102E5094675!952&authkey=!AHu_KR3cJN1jHt4. After that disconnect your computer from the internet.

  2. Uninstall Avast via add/remove. At the end restart your computer.

  3. Using the tools from step 1. 1st run the avast uninstall utility. It will ask if you want to restart your computer in safe mode. Click yes, after that the tool will restart your computer in safe mode automatically. Follow the instructions. After when the computer restarts again. Manually restart again your computer again and manual run your computer in safe mode using the f8 button on your keyboard. Once in safe mode run the Avast Cleanup Tool. Follow the instructions of that tool.

After you have removed Avira via Pondus link. Follow the steps that I mentioned. Once that is done. Install a fresh copy of Avast. Once installed it will do a quick system startup scan. Once that is finished restart your computer manually again. After that register your copy of Avast.

Simple step by step instruction for installing avast are part of my signature.

Hey guys,

thanks for your help! I did everything u told me, what is the next step to get the service running ?

Reboot and register. The avast software will do the rest. 8)

Yes, i already did so. Whats next ?

No need for you to do anything else. Just sit back and relax. Avast will do the rest. You are fully protected

Ok, but it still says i am not protected and vulnarable in that red error box, exactly like before re-installing. :o That confuses me.

  • Which version of avast! Free…?
  • OS…? (32/64 Bit…? - which SP…?)
  • Other security related software installed…?
  • Which AV(s) did you use before avast!..?

Avast Version: avast! Free Antivirus 2014.9.0.2021
OS Version: Windows XP Home 32-Bit SP3
Other Software: Comodo Firewall 7.0.317799.4142; Peerblock 1.2
Last AV: Avira Antivir Free

I don’t think you used the Avira Antivir free removal tool. Ok do these following things again. Before you do these steps 1st remove Comodo Firewall and Peerblock and just to be on the safe side I will restart the computer manually (restart if instructed by the uninstaller) after uninstallation.

  1. Download avast uninstall utility http://www.avast.com/en-nz/uninstall-utility
and Rejzor’s Avast Cleanup Tool. Avast cleanup tool is here https://onedrive.live.com/?cid=94a12102e5094675&id=94A12102E5094675!952&authkey=!AHu_KR3cJN1jHt4. Don’t run these tools yet.

  2. Download the Avira Antivir Free uninstall utility via here http://www.avira.com/en/downloads#tools. Scroll down and you will see a tool called Avira Registry Cleaner. Don’t run this tool yet. Disconnect your computer from the internet.

  3. Uninstall Avast via add/remove. Restart your computer

  4. Run the tools mentioned in step 1. Run the Avast uninstall utility in normal mode and it will show you two options. Click ok when it says do you want to run this tool in safe mode. After you click ok, the tool will restart your computer in safe mode automatically. Follow the instructions and it will ask you to restart your compter again. After it restarts again, restart your computer manually again but this time run it in safe mode press f8 and click safe mode. In safe mode run the Avast Cleanup Tool after it runs it will ask you to restart.

  5. Run the tool mentioned in step 2 in safe mode. Follow the instructions.

  6. Reconnect your computer to the internet. Download and install a fresh copy of Avast Free. After it gets installed it will do a quick system startup scan. After that has been done. Restart your computer manually again. After restart register your computer.

I did everything but registering and it still shows the same message.

The thing with registering is, i tried to generate a license key here (http://www.avast.com/registration-free-antivirus.php) and it sent me a key that didnt work (asserted invalid key), so i tried it again and got the same not working key. Now i tried to use several other email adresses and it stopped sending me keys whatever email i use, so how can i obtain a working (valid) license key ?

Why are you trying to obtain a key? Why don’t you register the program directly through the UI ???

I did ??? it led me to that URL !

I guess you didn’t want to follow the simple step by step instruction in my signature ???

I do and i literally did it twice. ^^

Best way to solve this is to contact avast support by submitting a ticket via here https://support.avast.com/Tickets/Submit
