I recently tried to install AVAST on UBUNTU, but since it is an RPM package, I have no idea what to do. I tried using ALIEN to create a DPKG version of the RPM, but when I tried to install, nothing appeared, though supposedly it installed.
Can someone give a detailed explanation on what I am supposed to do? Keep in mind, I am a newbie…
I need to boot on my Ubuntu installation but indeed I’ve used Alien to convert the pack to a rpm package and install it.
I did not remember if I made a manual icon on the desktop (most probably). On the avast installation folder there is a folder called icon that you could customize the link. The linked application should be avastgui if I remeber correctly.
I wish Alwil made this for linux users: rpm, deb, tar, gz, and other formats to download…
It won’t hurt that much for them, will it Dublin?
/usr/lib/avast4workstation by default
you can also create menu items in KDE/GNOME by running
% /usr/lib/avast4workstation/share/avast/desktop/install-desktop-entries.sh install
Tech, I hope, DEB package will be available soon too. :-[
i only had minor difficulties with the tarball install on my ubuntu breezy machine
altho i had problems with the first install and run…things seem to be working ok now
steps i used (please correct me if i’m wrong!)
1.) downloaded http://files.avast.com/files/linux/avast4workstation-1.0.5.tar.gz
2.) extracted all files to avast4workstation(default is avast4workstation-1.0.5)
3.) copied (using rootuser in nautilus) all files in:
avast4workstation/bin to /usr/bin
avast4workstation/lib to /usr/lib
avast4workstation/usr/share/ to /usr/share/(respective directories)
4.) created a desktop launcher pointing to /usr/bin/avastgui
ok it’s been some time since i did this… :-
…but as things go… had to re-format and do a newer install of the Ubuntu distro (5.10 - 6.06LTS) >:(
nothing serious just lost the hard drives
but, not really…seems this test unit(Basic E-Machine T1360)
im using has a few minor bugs i had to deal with in the ACPI BIOS.
(seems some attacks could actually rewrite this! go figure)
and, since this new version LTS came out set it up instead.
anyway after the LTS install i did install and still have avast running.
v1.06 (no b?)
still looking forward to finding that skins are are available for the linux distros
