I have a Asus Eee PC and would only like to start avast! when I need it, I’m not always connected to the net so I don’t need the protection. But when I am I want to be able to just start avast myself. In other words, I don’t want avast to auto boot everytime I start the computer. How do I change this?
It’s not right to think that when you’re not connected you’re save.
avast is not designed to run on-demand or disabled.
But you can let the avast services on Manual if you don’t want to startup the antivirus.
Are you saying that each boot avast makes a long scan? (blue screen)
What OS are you using as the early eee PC the 2, 4GB versions had linux as the OS ?
If Linux I believe that the avast 4 Unix/Linux isn’t resident but on-demand, that however still requires it to be installed, but you would be the one starting it. However, it still wouldn’t be resident only on-demand, so what OS you are using is important. If windows then Tech has covered that, it is resident all the time.

this tiny computer only has 630mhz cpu (4gb SSD drive) and I have stripped down the my windows XP with nlite so that I get a boot time of under 20seconds. I play around with this computer and I don’t want avast to boot up at every startup and slow down my boot time. I just need avast to work when I tell it to. Thanks for the reply

I’m using Windows XP SP2 stripped down to the bare minimum using this guide http://www.i64x.com/eeexp.php and some of my own modifications. The XP installation is 2.5GB on my SSD drive so I got over 1GB to spare, I got a 2GB DDR2 memory in it too. Thats good. I have an 8GB SDHC in the eee pc so I use that for movies, music and such ;D
Set avast! services to manual:
Start > Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services
