Can Missfitz or someone tell me what the answer is to quitting Avast! for Macs? I keep trying and even ‘force quit’ doesn’t work - it just keeps coming back!

Avast is installed by default in persistent mode. To quit the application you must disable it. Go to preferences and uncheck “Launch at startup as a persistent application” you should then be able to close avast.
A better option though is just to hide it and let it scan in the background. you can hide the program by pressing Command + H (Command key is the apple key)
Just for explanation, the “persistent mode” is default only for MacOS 10.5 Leopard. On Tiger, the launchd mechanism is broken and unsuable as persistence-guard for applications with GUI, and thus, different mechanism (Login Items) is used here.
