I am not exactly sure what your issue is :-
Do you have Avast installed, and you just lost the desktop icon ? Then :

Start - All Programs - Avast Software - Right click on Avast … - Copy to - Desktop.

I have this problem too! But there never was an icon in the menubar. I use a MacBook Pro running Yosemite. And I don’t understand your answer!
